How do I properly water a newly planted (10') Southern Magnolia in lower northwestern Arkansas?

About once a week should do it.

Magnolias meed deep watering, it likes moist soils.

By all means, mulch the tree out to the drip line for the first three years. If rainfall in your area averages an inch a week, it is unlikely that you will have to water the tree after the initial watering in that was done at planting. If rainfall fails to meet these averages, then a deep watering once a week in well drained soils is all that is needed.

As long as the soil your tree is planted in is organically fertile, then a slow release nitrogen will suffice.

Magnolias like a somewhat acidic soil. A PH test would be advisable.

Best of luck with your new tree.
