Magnolia's?

I have a Magnolia that is currently flowering - I want to move it into a large wine barrell as it isn't doing too good in the ground - when would be the best time to move it?

Move it in the autumn when it is dormant and look at why it hasn't done too well in the ground to date.


It may be that it's not too keen on the soil you have and if so by putting it in a container you have the opportunity of customizing the soil for the future because magnolias prefer a compost a little on the acid side and also prefer-like most other shrubs-free draining soil.


So make sure your wine barrel has drainage holes drilled into its base particularly if you live in an area that can see high rainfalls and place in the bottom old bits of crockery/stones to help drainage before placing the compost above.


Magnolias also benefit from feed and will be quite happy in a semi shaded position
Reply:If it is already flowering, it makes me wonder where you are. It would be best to move it in the winter, but if it is truly unhappy where it is it would be better to get it in a nicer spot with some good soil. Just water it in well and use some transplant fertilizer. Even if you didn't have the greatest success with this years blossoms, it might be better for it in the long run to situate itn a better situation. Good Luck.
Reply:in the fall but you will keep having to give it a bigger pot the soil might not be right in the ground where it is at now need to use liquid fertilizer dont set to close to a brick wall this will burn the plant worked in the nursery for 20 years now
