there are not any flowering trees nearby, could this be the problem, i planted the tree at them end of last summer, what could be wrong?

Hopefully the tree is in a sunny location, if not it could be a bit behind others. Also it won't bloom as well if it is in a partially shaded spot. It could also be that since it was just planted last summer the tree is using it's energy to establish itself. You also should keep it well watered so if you didn't last summer could be another reason. Be patient and deeply water it every few days if it doesn't rain until it drops it leaves in the fall.
Reply:It depends on the type of magnolia and where you live. I live in the country at a higher elevation then the closest town, mine blooms a good month after all the others.
Reply:A late freeze can burn all the buds of a Magnolia and cause it not to bloom. In Utah, we can have years with beautiful blooms and years when we loose all blooms....due to a late freeze.
Reply:I had the same problem and solved it by feeding it with plant food for acid loving plants.
