Where would I plant a Japanese Magnolia?

They don't grow very fast. In a true Japanese garden it would be by itself next to a large rock (boulder).

If you place it at the back of a bed with intermediate bushes in front of it and ground cover in front of that, your garden will appear bigger than it is.

Mine is at the top of a retaining wall overhanging the upward pathway.

Where would I plant a Japanese Magnolia?
I would say, in the ground.
