Magnolia Tree - Rockville, MD?
Recently bought a house in Rockville, MD. We have a nice big magnolia tree in the front yard. Recently, its been shedding a lot of leaves. The leave are turning yellow and dropping off. Any thoughts to what this might be. Should I call a professional?
Magnolia Tree - Rockville, MD?
Are there spots on the leaves or are they just turning yellow? If there are spots it's most likely a fungal disease and you can call a tree doctor if you want. Or if you can spray it yourself get Daconil and spray it as directed.
If it's just turning yellow and there are no spots it is probably from an environmental stress and they are sissy plants--they get stressed easily. In this case there is nothing to do but let it go. Usually there is enough stored food in the roots to cause secondary buds to develop and rebud a 2nd time. If it does rebud you can give it a root feeding at that time. Your favorite L%26amp;G Center should have the Daconil or the fertilizer.
Reply:I live in KY and have a huge tree. They do this constantly and it seems you have to rake everyday. Thats the problem with these trees. They're beautiful when they bloom though. I'd like to cut mine down cause i'm tired or raking. There are magnolia trees all around this area and they all do it.

Purefoods beat Magnolia after two Overtimes with a 127-126 escape. Purefoods import Darius Rice finished with a career high 56 points in his PBA debut to lead Purefoods TJ Giants.
Local Dondon Hontiveros led Magnolia with 29 points but import Jameel Watkins only scored 23 with 18 rebounds before fouling out with 1:22 in the second overtime for Magnolia.
Following the win, Purefoods finds itself in a four-way tie on top with Coca-Cola, Red Bull, Air21 and reigning all-Filipino champion Sta. Lucia.
James Yap added 20 points for the Giants, Enrico Villanueva also added 16 points and 11 rebounds in his first game with his new team while Kerby Raymundo had 11 markers, but missed a potential game-winning reverse layup with four seconds left in the first overtime and the score tied at 116-116.

Magnolia's?
I have a Magnolia that is currently flowering - I want to move it into a large wine barrell as it isn't doing too good in the ground - when would be the best time to move it?
Magnolia's?
Move it in the autumn when it is dormant and look at why it hasn't done too well in the ground to date.
It may be that it's not too keen on the soil you have and if so by putting it in a container you have the opportunity of customizing the soil for the future because magnolias prefer a compost a little on the acid side and also prefer-like most other shrubs-free draining soil.
So make sure your wine barrel has drainage holes drilled into its base particularly if you live in an area that can see high rainfalls and place in the bottom old bits of crockery/stones to help drainage before placing the compost above.
Magnolias also benefit from feed and will be quite happy in a semi shaded position
Reply:If it is already flowering, it makes me wonder where you are. It would be best to move it in the winter, but if it is truly unhappy where it is it would be better to get it in a nicer spot with some good soil. Just water it in well and use some transplant fertilizer. Even if you didn't have the greatest success with this years blossoms, it might be better for it in the long run to situate itn a better situation. Good Luck.
Reply:in the fall but you will keep having to give it a bigger pot the soil might not be right in the ground where it is at now need to use liquid fertilizer dont set to close to a brick wall this will burn the plant worked in the nursery for 20 years now

A tree ; nice to see ! Magnolia soulanglana ( Rustica Rubra ) . Where we find this tree in the world ?
This tree can be grown in zones 5-9. It is also referred to as "Saucer Magnolia". This tree likes full sun and acidic soil. Below are two sites that you can check out, to learn about or purchase these trees. You may be able to find them at a local nursery as well. Good Luck!!!
Reply:Several of the magnolia family live fine in Oklahoma. You'll see them as yard trees here.
Reply:Magnolia Soulangiana is a native of China and Japan, however you might see it growing in the Southern States of the US, as there are a lot of magnolias grown there. I saw some in an arboretum in North Carolina.

What was the meaning behind the falling of the frogs in the movie Magnolia?
Actually, it isn't a reference to Exodus. This is discussed at various sites. But, I found this discussion at IMDB:
I just watched this for the first time and I liked it, though I probably need to watch it a few more times. The frogs though... It just took me completely be suprise and I'm not sure I understand what it was supposed to mean. I realize that people have been saying that it's a reference to Exodus 8:2, but from what I've read PTA wrote the scene before finding out it happened in the Bible, so I was thinking there was probably something more to it. If anyone could shed some light on it for me, I'd appreciate it.
From a nonbiblical standpoint, the frogs were supposed to be representative of the mindboggling coincidences that came to define this movie. The raining of the frogs was also supposed to reinforce the theme of intertwined relationships, as all of the characters were in one way or another affected by this incident. Brilliant scene, in my opinion.
The frogs are a weird, random event that PTA based on certain real life occurrences in which freak weather conditions lift the contents of ponds or other small bodies of water and deposit them elsewhere in an apparent "rain" (type 'rain of frogs' into Wikipedia for more info). It is my contention that one of the themes of "Magnolia" is human beings' need for explanations for things that seem unexplainable and their inability to accept mundane explanations for things (ie, they'd rather hear "God did it" than "It was the result of unusual weather conditions). When it was pointed out to PTA that the rain of frogs at the end of the film carried similarity to the plague of frogs in Exodus 8:2, PTA recognized this as an opportunity to enforce his point about this need for explanations. Christians would attribute this act to God, desperate as they are to see everything in the context in which they feel the most comfortable. So, really the frog's ultimate explanation is left to the (culturally mediated) judgement of the viewer, and people who see God in them are really just projecting their belief in God onto the things that they experience.
Hegelian Dialectic (a la Wikipedia):
In classical philosophy, "dialectic" (Greek:) is "controversy": the exchange of arguments and counter-arguments respectively advocating propositions (theses) and counter-propositions (antitheses). The outcome of the exercise might not simply be the refutation of one of the relevant points of view, but a synthesis or combination of the opposing assertions, or at least a qualitative transformation in the direction of the dialogue
The "but it did" bit isn't about just one of those things, or the other, happening. It's about everything. All of these strange things coming together to create an entire reality. That's what this whole movie is about: the way things come together.
"We may be done with the past, but the past ain't done with us."
-Back to Hegel: The past determines the future, just as it did the present. It's all the coming together of opposing forces to create a new reality.
The Intervention in the end is just another in a series of strange situations that brings all of these people together. Another force to deal with. The frogs have nothing to do with the Bible. In fact, they were originally written as cats and dogs (even referenced in the scene where Stanley first arrives at the studio). The raining frogs are just that: Raining Frogs. And it it may seem like something that you wouldn't believe if you saw it in a movie, and you'd say "That could never happen" ...but it did.
Ok, some may have stated this on other posts. I once read that PTA did research on the plant "magnolia". He found that the name originated from a "place" called the MAGONIA. Basically, the MAGONIA is a place where missing objects wait to be found. This famously includes ships lost at sea. These objects wait in the MAGONIA until it is their time to be found. That being said, is it possible that John C. Reiley's gun ends up in the MAGONIA? Is it also possible that this movie takes place while the frogs time has come to escape the MAGONIA?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~...
I know that's a lot of material, but it does show that the meaning of the rain of frogs is a topic for debate and will vary with the viewer.
What are some unique characteristics a magnolia has?
The Magnolia flower has a number of features not found in many other flowers. Firstly the flower parts are in spirals not in whorls (rings). There are no green sepals just lots of white petal-like things (many more than the usual 3-5 that most flowering plants have), then lots of spirally-arranged stamens, then lots of free ovaries, also in a spiral. They are pollinated by beetles. Each ovary becomes a small fruit, with the entire fruiting structure somewhat cone-like. Each small fruit opens separately to release one seed. The seed has a fleshy coat called a sarcotesta.
Southern Magnolia?
Hey all. I have a couple of Southern Magnolias (the original strain) One is about 8 feet in height and the other maybe 4. I live near St. Louis, MO and it gets fairly cold from mid October or so through Early April. I currently have them in 3-5 gallon planters filled with miracle grow soil. My question is how can I minimize winter damage (snow, cold winds ect??) I mean I could move them near my hot tub out of the wind but they wouldn't get as much sun (if any) I also have some DD Blanchard Varieties planted but supposedly they can tolerate the cold. Any suggestions?? Thanks!
Southern Magnolia?
I would take them out of the containers and plant them in a direction not facing the north.
I'm in zone 6 just south of St. Louis they grow exceedingly well here and in the city. Just not sure about the direction. The link below gives you a multitude of informational links to choose from. I just lost 4 japanese maples in that late freeze we had. All facing north!
Good Luck!
Which golf courses should I play at Disney World? Palm, Magnolia, and 2 others are there. Which is the best?
The Mgnolia is a beautiful course. I played it for the first time in May. Tough challenging course. The Palm is not bad either though.
hey! i asked a similar question a couple of weeks ago and i came to the decision that im going to play falcons fire. They also have a sister course and you can get a 2 course package for a discount rate. By the way i'll be there in november, how bout you?
Reply:I liked the magnolia, but they're all pretty expensive. You get a better value if you go to a course like Celebration or Falcon's Fire. Both of these courses are close by, and I believe are more fun to play. The disney courses have a different kind of grass in the rough, don't know what it's called, but it's really nasty.
I think that kinda detracts from the enjoyment
Is My Magnolia tree dying???
I have a magnolia tree that was only planted last year and was caught in the drought, so it didn't have as much water as maybe needed, this year it is still growing a few leaves but it isnt even producing flower buds, i give it special food, and plenty of water, so what is wrong with it, is it dying? Or is this common in young trees?
Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Is My Magnolia tree dying???
The time when it was in a drought has set it back - you just need to give it time Id recommend you only feed it a small amount of bone meal which will encourage root growth, they do like water but need good drainage so the roots dont rot.
I wonder which type it is does it have ruby flowers or white, if you want a replacement let me know providing ur in the UK or Europe.
Reply:maybe you are overdoing the fertilizer!? Try to leave it alone
and only water it if you get no rain for a while if it's been in the ground since last year it should be fine!
Explain tradition of magnolia uses in the south at Christmas?
Southern magnolia are used to decorate at Christmas because they are plentiful and have large, fragrant blooms that last well.
I have a magnolia "Betty", I need some growing details.?
Magnolia "Betty" is from a group of hybrids referred to as the "Little Girl Series". They include: Ann, Betty, Jane, Judy, Pinkie, Randy, Ricki, and Susan. They are the result of crossing Magnolia liliflora 'Nigra' (Lily Magnolia) with Magnolia stellata ' Rosea' (Star Magnolia). They where attempting to produce a Magnolia that flowers later than the Star Magnolia to avoid frost damage to the flowers. They tend to grow erect and shrubby to 10-20'. They flower before they leaf out. Sometimes they will sporadically flower again in summer. They are best grown in zones 4 to 6b. Foliage tends to become tattered and they are prone to powdery mildew. They also tend to produce water sprouts when they are stressed. Not all Magnolias are evergreen. 'Betty' is deciduous.
You generally do not prune Magnolia. Dead or broken branches can be pruned at any time. Prune lightly if you do need to prune/shape. Prune branches 1/2" or less. Heavy pruning can stress the tree and produce a profusion of water sprout growths.
Magnolias like full sun and acidic soil, they are evergreens. They can be grown in pots, but prefer to be in the ground. Epsom salts sprinkled around the drip line is a great, inexpensive fertilizer.
Is magnolia Texas a good place to visit? why, or why not?
Magnolia, Texas is a pretty small town outside of Houston. I don't really know what you would want to do there because there really isn't a whole lot to dod there. Houston is close by and you could do stuff there. I guess it depends on what you are looking to do.
Reply:I live in Texas. Its alright. The only places worth visiting are San Antonio, Austin, and South Padre island. Dallas and Houston are the same, Houston has more pollution. and Galveston is a disgusting beach. And since every place i mentioned worth seeing is about 3-7 hours from magnolia. Your only option is Houston. You probably won't be impressed. That area of Texas is FLAT. Its uncanny.
Southern magnolia?
A local power company hired a contractor to trim trees in my neighborhood. The contractor cut the entire south side of my magnolia tree(thats in my front yard)off. My tree is over 40 years old and is now a sad sight indeed, it is quite literally been cut in half. How do I determine the value of my tree both esthetically and financially. The kicker is that my tree was not of any threat to the power lines.
%26amp; this website will advise you what to do regarding your magnolia tree! I personally am very sorry this happened to your tree! If the power companies right of way maintenance crews thought the tree was a problem they should have let you know first ! I lost five small redbud trees that were under the tree canopy %26amp; off the right of way because of an overzealous tree trimmer so I know exactly how you feel! If you know of an real estate attorney, I suggest you talk with him or her %26amp; have them contact the power company,as they usually will pay damages for coming onto your property and off the easement ! They do carry insurance for this type of thing %26amp; it is a contractor liability type of insurance of generally $1million.
Hard to say without a picture. And what KIND of Magnolia is it? There are quite a few that have purple and white blossoms. I can't even tell you if that's normal or not. How does the rest of the tree look? The leaves?
Post a picture if you can, and we'll take a look.
Can i find and grow jacaranda or Magnolia Tree Pakistan???
Magnolia tree (most kinds) will grow in areas that have some frost/freezing temperatures, but where the ground doesn't freeze too long (if at all), because some of them are evergreen and must have water all year.
Jacaranda trees cannot handle a severe frost, and certainly cannot tolerate frozen ground. It depends on where you live in Pakistan - what are the mean temperatures? Do you have cold winters, with frosts? Both trees also need relatively deep, rich soil. If your soil is rocky, you will need to grow them in a container (a very large one!)
You might want to check out the specific requirements for each tree, and determine if the climate and conditions where you live is suitable for each.
Good luck - they are both beautiful trees!
Can i find and grow jacaranda or Magnolia Tree Pakistan???
Yes both are found in Tropical and sub tropical areas.
India and Pakistan being Subtropical these trees are found there .
You can easily grow and cultivate them there.
Good Luck!
Jacaranda trees cannot handle a severe frost, and certainly cannot tolerate frozen ground. It depends on where you live in Pakistan - what are the mean temperatures? Do you have cold winters, with frosts? Both trees also need relatively deep, rich soil. If your soil is rocky, you will need to grow them in a container (a very large one!)
You might want to check out the specific requirements for each tree, and determine if the climate and conditions where you live is suitable for each.
Good luck - they are both beautiful trees!
Can i find and grow jacaranda or Magnolia Tree Pakistan???
Yes both are found in Tropical and sub tropical areas.
India and Pakistan being Subtropical these trees are found there .
You can easily grow and cultivate them there.
My dog has been eating Magnolia Leaves, are they poisonous?
Only if he eats like 10 plants would it really harm him. It could make him sick though (throw-up)
My dog has been eating Magnolia Leaves, are they poisonous?
Eating too many of them will make him/her sick but if he's not eating too many of them or does not show any sign of sickness then he's fine.
Where are hotspots to visit in Magnolia, Texas?
Magnolia is where the Renaissance festival is held October / November. I don't know of anything else out there.
Reply:The receptionist at my office is from Magnolia and she says that the big things in Magnolia are keggers in the woods and cow tipping. Head to Lake Conroe or go to The Woodlands for fun if you don't want to go all the way into Houston.
Do magnolia trees require a lot of water?
Not really. No more than most any other tree like maples or oaks. I have one that's doing fine while we're in the throes of a pretty good drought.
Do magnolia trees require a lot of water?
The amount of water needed depends on the soil. The specifications for a magnolia tree are a moist, well drained soil. They also thrive better in an acidic soil, which can be obtained by using a pine or cypress mulch around the base of the tree. If your soil is sandy, you will have to water more often that if it is clay based.
Magnolia tree diseases.my magnolia tree has small brown dots on the leaves and they are dying.?
Maybe this can help: http://www.treehelp.com/trees/magnolia/m...
The University of Florida says the same: "This tree is generally disease free. Magnolia may be subject to leaf spots caused by bacteria or a large number of fungi. Leaf spots rarely require chemical controls. Rake up and dispose of infected leaves."
Help for my magnolia pease!?
I planted a Magnolia soulangia in my garden a few years ago. Every year something eats large holes in the leaves and sometimes leaves them that they are almost just a skeleton. I can see no sign on bugs or caterpillars or snails on the tree so not sure how to treat it. Have any of you had a similar problem and do you have any suggestions what I should do?
Help for my magnolia pease!?
I had the same problem.I lost nearly all the leaves on my magnolia's last spring. At first i couldn't see any pest, but on closer inspection I found bright green mini caterpillars. I used a white oil spray and they were gone almost straight away. You may need to re-apply though.
Reply:It could be grasshoppers.Use NOLO bait in June. It seems to be the only thing that works.You should have already fed the tree in Sept. Keep it uniformly watered. Feed after it blooms%26amp; again in June.Holes in leaves won't kill the tree; it is just unsightly.
Reply:this would moore that likely be a slug, mostly they come out at night. you can buy slug pellets or sprinkly some salt around the plant, not on it . and this should keep them at bay.
Reply:It could be Capsid Bug, they are quite hard to see, but will leave the leaves like skeletons, I find if I give the shrub a shake some usually fall to the ground. If it is this bug, you will need to spray with a general bug killer.
Moving a Japanese magnolia...?
No one has lived in the house next door to me for several years and there is this beautiful Japanese magnolia in the front yard. It's just wasting away and I want to dig it up and move in to my yard, but I don't know how far into the ground I should dig or what. The tree isn't very tall, less than five and a half feet. Can someone please help me? Suggestion on how to move it without killing it or damaging it, please!!
Moving a Japanese magnolia...?
dig out a big circle around the tree,trying to get all the roots,lift out trying to get as much soil as possible and set on a big piece of plastic ,wrap it around the tree and move.
It's not very racially diverse, so if that's what you're looking for, then you need to move closer to Houston.
Your kids' future schools: http://www.magnoliaisd.org/index.php
Magnolia High is 82% white, but only 3% black. Since Diversity is our strength, that may not be a good school for your kids. http://nces.ed.gov/ccd/schoolsearch/scho...
If you move a little further south, you can send your kids to 91% black Yates High. They can join the other 2 white kids in the school (less than 0.2% of the school). Do your kids know Karate?http://nces.ed.gov/ccd/schoolsearch/scho... If you send a white kid to any school in the Houston Independant School District, I recommend some type of self defense training.
Reply:Small town outside of Houston. Very laid back and country. The town is like most Houston suburbs fastly growing.
Reply:Magnolia is a quiet country living area. I believe the schools are pretty good too
If you enjoy the peace and quiet then you will definately like Magnolia
Reply:Magnolia is beautiful. It's a very small town. If you will be working in Houston prepare yourself for a very long commute. You will be close to Tomball which used to be small but has grown so much in the last few years. Tomball is probably where you will do the majority of your shopping.
Good luck!
How do you paint a japanese magnolia?
I'd hire someone to do it. You're not going to paint ALL the Japanese magnolias are you? Because if you are, I think you'd better be careful. People get all gnarly when you vandalize their trees. Especially the Japanese. Remember Pearl Harbor? It wasn't about military strength, nor control of the Pacific trading zone. No, Eleanor Roosevelt painted a Japanese magnolia.
Painting him yellow or white would not offend him as much - but magnolia, I think he would take offence.
Where can i find jobs for a 15 year old female it the town of magnolia,TX?
If you are just wanting a summer job, I would suggest babysitting, or walking dogs, if you are a dog lover. Not sure how big Magnolia is and if there would be anough of a business for a dog walker. Offer to look after a neighbor's pets when they are on vacation, or while they work. Good luck, have a great summer.
Neighbors - either babysitting, pet sitting, gardening, light housekeeping and running errands are common jobs that teenagers can do.
You may be able to work at a fast food restaurant...
Best Buy is asking me to work for them as a Magnolia Home Theater Pro 2. Would this be a good move?
I am currently unhappy in my current sales job, and I am hesitant to go back into retail after having past experience at Circuit City. Several of the same people I loved working with at Circuit are now at this Best Buy, and they all swear up and down that it's so much better than Circuit was. If you work at Best Buy, or know someone who has, especially in the Magnolia Home Theater as a Pro 2, please give me some advice as to whether or not you think I should go work there. Also, for someone as highly saught after as I apparently am, what kind of pay can I expect from them?
Thanks!
Steve
Steve,
I currently work for best buy in bel air maryland. The best buy company is definately an awesome company to work for, trust me, two years working for them. Number one is the discount, 5% above what best buy pays for it. Number two, MHT Pros get paid well and magnolia is a company with 50 years of selling products the complete solution. Number Three, bonuses, you get one for how much stuff is not stolen and one for how well your district does on a yearly basis. Also other bonuses are available for leadership positions monthly.
Best Buy is an awesome company!
I'm currently a salaried manager at another retail chain and best Buy is trying to steal me....which is flattering.
People I've talked to say it is fairly high pressure, but high ethical standards and great attention to customer service both of which are VERY important to me.
Good luck! I hope it works out for the Best for you! :-)
Reply:I worked at best buy for 2 years and hated it.
Reason: I thought there was too much pressure to sell without any compensation. If I sold $10,000.00 in merchandise, there were no bonuses or anything
If the store put up big numbers the managers would get trips to Vegas and get $10,000.00 in free electronics and we'd get a cookout and a pat on the back.
I personally don't believe in sales without commission.
Thanks!
Is Magnolia a real name for a girl?
Technically, almost any floral name is fair game for use as a feminine name. And Magnolia is no exception. ;)
In fact, it was actually on the SSA's list of most commonly-given names nearly EVERY YEAR from 1880 to 1940! The only year it didn't make the list in that entire 60-year span was 1939. ;) So don't let anyone tell you it's not used as a name ... or that it shouldn't be. Check it out for yourself. http://www.socialsecurity.gov/cgi-bin/ba...
I'm sure the similarity to other feminine names, such as Margaret, Magdala and Magdalene, helps, as do the more familiar nickname possibilities -- Maggie, Molly, Nola, Mia, Lia, etc. Hope that helps! ;)
My magnolia tree did not bloom this year?
I have 3 magnolia trees in my yard, two bloomed and one hasn't. In fact in the 10 years I've had that tree it has only bloomed once. Maybe it needs a deep feeding of fertilizer to the roots.
My magnolia tree did not bloom this year?
Has it bloomed in past years? Possibly a late frost/freeze or extra cold winter killed off the flower buds this year.
What to do when a magnolia tree is losing its leaves?
I've had magnolia's that lost their leaves and died soon after.
If it is a large tree and losing it's leaves there should be new leaves ready to replace them. They are evergreen in the south. Up north they do lose their leaves and grow new ones. I guess it depends upon the species.
Magnolia not flowering?
Why is my magnolia not flowering - its small but has been planted 3 years ago and it has never flowered - we live in the countryside of lothian scotland and it is planted in a walled south facing garden, acid soil well drained
Magnolia not flowering?
It may need more time to get used to its surroundings. The roots need room to spread out. It needs lots of direct sunlight. Well-drained soil is good. They need to be well-watered, but not water-logged. Maybe try a fertilizer but I'm not convinced about this as you say your soil is acidic.
Reply:Magnolias take a bit of time I have had one for four years and this is the first year we have flowers. Be patient it is worth the wait
Reply:Magnolias can take up to ten years to flower......have patience.
Reply:I think mine was 5 years before it flowered. It sounds like you are lucky enough to have ideal conditions but you could try putting some ericaceous compost around the base to help it (I did this but I dont have the ideal soil that you do) and cover it with a sheet on very frosty nights. The first time mine flowered it had only 2 blooms, then the next year there were 12 and now after 4 years there are loads of lovely blooms. Hopefully you will find the same in a year or 2 - good luck !
Reply:I would say replant a new one. I have had many flowers not bloom where others have. I would guess its just your plant. http://www.newprocontainers.com http://www.qualitysilks.com
I have a magnolia bush that I is basically dead but has new shoots growing. can i cut these for a new bush?
the bush is basically dead, the bark is peeling off, and it is about 30 feet high. there are new shoots with buds on them i would like to cut some of the new growing branches off to start new bushes but not sure how to do this. if anyone knows what to do please let me know. it was a very beautiful bush. thanks
I have a magnolia bush that I is basically dead but has new shoots growing. can i cut these for a new bush?
You can get new plants from the shoots. This type of vegetative plant propagation is easy to do. Simply cut 12" cuttings off the new growth. Use pruners that are clean. Remove 4-6" of leaves off the bottom. Place bottom of cutting in water for one second, then remove and dip the bottom in rooting hormone (available at independent nurseries) and then plant the cutting into a nursery potting mix w/ fertilizer in it. I would use a small plastic 4" container and then water every day until it begins to develop a root system. Then it will be ready to transplant.
I have experience in taking cuttings in this manner. It works!
Reply:many plants can be rooted from cuttings. i must admit i havent tried magnolia. but hey, youve got nothing to loose. i would make cuttings 6-8 inches long, trim off the leaves, dip them in rooting hormone, shove them about half way down in loose sand or vermiculite, keep them wet for 6-8 weeks and see what happens.
I have experience in taking cuttings in this manner. It works!
Reply:many plants can be rooted from cuttings. i must admit i havent tried magnolia. but hey, youve got nothing to loose. i would make cuttings 6-8 inches long, trim off the leaves, dip them in rooting hormone, shove them about half way down in loose sand or vermiculite, keep them wet for 6-8 weeks and see what happens.
Can anyone tell me the name of a tree that looks like a magnolia but has yellowish balls growing on it?
Sounds like a Loquat Tree, Eriobotrya japonica. The yellow balls are the fruit. They are very tasty, but they each have a single big seed which keeps them from having very much flesh to them.
Magnolia flower's meaning?
Example: Rose is to love as Magnolia is to ???. I was just wondering if anyone new what meaning they've heard about the magnolia flower. I don't seem to find any. I know there are many about the rose, the calla lily and so on, but I'm curious about the magnolia. Thanks.
Magnolia flower's meaning?
The magnolia is a very sacred flower, used in Indian weddings. They see it as a very strong, powerful flower, because orange is thought to be a sacred color.
Magnolias symbolize strength, and yet they are delicate and beautiful.
Reply:Magnificent aroma,,,aphrodesiac.
Reply:Magnolia is a large genus of about 210[1] flowering plant species in the subfamily Magnolioideae of the family Magnoliaceae.
The natural range of Magnolia species is rather scattered. It includes eastern North America, Central America and the West Indies and east and southeast Asia. Some species are found in South America. Today many species of Magnolia and an ever increasing number of hybrids can also be found as ornamental trees in large parts of North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
The genus is named after Pierre Magnol, a botanist from Montpellier in France. See Origin of the name Magnolia.
Magnolia is an ancient genus. Having evolved before bees appeared, the flowers developed to encourage pollination by beetles. As a result, the carpels of Magnolia flowers are tough, to avoid damage by eating and crawling beetles. Fossilised specimens of M. acuminata have been found dating to 20 million years ago, and of plants identifiably belonging to the Magnoliaceae dating back to 95 million years ago. Another primitive aspect of Magnolias is their lack of distinct sepals or petals. The term tepal has been coined to refer to the intermediate element that Magnolia has instead. Magnolias are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Giant Leopard Moth.
The Magnolia is the official state flower of both Mississippi and Louisiana[2]. Mississippi's state nickname is the "Magnolia State", because of the abundance of magnolias in the state. The magnolia is also the official state tree of Mississippi.
Reply:Magnolia's make me think of the old south.
Does Magnolia bakery in NYC ship their products?
I wanted to see if they will send cupcakes in the mail or fedex (whatever method).. does anyone know??
Does Magnolia bakery in NYC ship their products?
no, and even if they did, i would advise against buying them. they are one of the most over-hyped things in NYC. the cake is dry and flavorless and the icing is sickingly sweet.
one more tourist trap created by sex and the city.
How do the deaths in Magnolia relate to the rest of the film?
After the entire film, it goes back to the 3 men who were hung for a murder, the suicide of the scuba diver and the suicide teen, and I do not understand what tese 3 coincidences have to do with the rest of the film, other than there mention in the intro. I feel like they have nothing to with anything that is inbetween them, and I think they probably should, and I was hopeing someone could shed some light on that.
How do the deaths in Magnolia relate to the rest of the film?
Those initial stories depicted in the intro are meant to set the stage for the stories of the characters in the film. There really is no narrative connection between them, but are meant to show events that involve synchronicity and karma.
As bizarre the stories in the film are, those news stories were true and are meant to show that these things do in fact happen.
Reply:24 hours in L.A.; it's raining cats and dogs. Two parallel and intercut stories dramatize men about to die: both are estranged from a grown child, both want to make contact, and neither child wants anything to do with dad. Earl Partridge's son is a charismatic misogynist; Jimmy Gator's daughter is a cokehead and waif. A mild and caring nurse intercedes for Earl, reaching the son; a prayerful and upright beat cop meets the daughter, is attracted to her, and leads her toward a new calm. Meanwhile, guilt consumes Earl's young wife, while two whiz kids, one grown and a loser and the other young and pressured, face their situations. The weather, too, is quirky. When should I prune my Magnolia?
To save the following seasons' flowers, prune within a week or 2 after current flowers are spent...or if insects or disease are an issue in your area during the growing season,you can prune in winter, you'll just be cutting off some of the following season's flowers
Im looking for some experienced help in the flooring business. Does anyone have experience in Magnolia?
You must havethe variety called "saucer"
Magnolia Trees: Varieties, Other varieties of magnolia trees besides "Saucer" magnolia trees include the "Star" (M. stellata), "Sweet Bay" ( M. virginiana) and "Southern" (M. grandiflora). There are considerable differences between the varieties, not the least of which is seen in the range of sizes.
You really need to know what variety you have in order to do it right. Below is a link with photos pick out yours then decide which variety to look up for pruning.
Pruning information
Magnolia pruning
Established magnolias usually do not require regular pruning; generally they do not respond well to pruning. But where damaged branches or overgrown specimens need work then this should be done when the tree is in full leaf, usually during midsummer. Pruning cuts made at this time of the year will have plenty of time to begin healing before the onset of winter, and are less prone to dieback.
Most of what I understand about magnolia trees is prune when they are young and the older more established dont prune.
Reply:You prune right after it has bloomed.
Magnolia tree?
I want to grow a magnolia tree in my backyard. Only because I have a song about a magnolia tree and I sort of figured it would be appropriate. So I know next to nothing about gardening and I'd like to know if there's a particular kind I should chose. I live in Florida, by the way. The climate is pretty flatlined... thanks =D
Magnolia tree?
the southern magnolia is perfect of you. i have seen many grow in florida. i think they are evergreen over there, but the have scattered blooms all year long
Reply:Florida is great for magnolias. There are over 80 species and you can grow varieties that can't be grown anywhere else in the country. How much space do you have? Some are rather large but there are also dwarf varieties. Take your time when choosing. Maybe a local nursery can help you. When you find one that you like research it on the Internet. Trees are like kids. Some of them will live with you for 30 years or more. You can't pick your kids but you can be choosy about your landscape.
Reply:I agree with "weather"
Southern Magnolia is a well known and widely grown tree, native to the southeastern U.S. from North Carolina south to Florida.
Saucer Magnolias have a very delicate sweet fragrance. Sort of perfumey. You have to be right up on them to smell them.
Southern Magnolias have a clean lemony frangrance which can be quite strong. I can smell them all over my yard.
New Magnolia Tree Problem?
Hi. I live in the Seattle area, and I recently planted (6 months ago) a magnolia tree in my front yard. It's currently about a foot high.
It has been unseasonably dry in the Pacific NW, so I'm not sure if the tree is just dry or if something else is going on. Some of the leaves look burnt, and they are starting to turn from green to a yellowish color. I've been watering the tree about once a week. However, I am afraid of drowning it if I water it too much.
Should I just water it more? Or is there some type of fertilizer or tree food I can use? Thanks!!
New Magnolia Tree Problem?
It doesn't need fertilizer right now. Just get it on it's feet, so to speak. All any plant needs is water, decent soil, air, and light.
If you're watering it regularly and the leaves are turning yellow, that means you're over watering it. Too much water can look just like not enough water, as the roots are rotting and the plant then has now way to get the water up into itself. I'd let it fully dry out for a second, then water it. Remember, moist soil, not mud. Help it along, but don't mother it to death.
Reply:Don't fertilize it this year.
Dig down near the tree, but outside the rootball. How deeply is the ground wet? I'm almost willing to bet you need to water it more. (I'm a few hours S of you, in the Willamette Valley -- my first year trees get an hour's slow trickle once a week this summer, and they're still a bit on the dry side). Try giving it a good long soak once a week if the root zone depth is not moist.
If the soil is soggy, you also have your answer, and you can decrease the watering.
Planting magnolia trees?
I live in louisiana and I want to plant a magnolia tree in my yard I was wondering what is the best time of year to do that?
Planting magnolia trees?
Fall is generally considered the best time of year to plant new trees and shrubs. Fall is a cool-moist season, followed by a dormant season, followed by another cool-moist season. It gives the plant a lot of time to establish a root system before the hot summer season, and all that stress.
Be sure to follow the directions that the nursery gives you in regard to planting, mulching and staking the tree.
Good luck-
Reply:put out a call to the Augusta National Golf club.
they have the best magnolia trees on earth
Reply:What kind of magnolia???? The evergreen type (m. Grandaflora) can be planted anytime. The deciduous magnolia is best planted when it has lost its leaves.
Does anyone know of any magnolia trees in the north suburban chicagoland area?
I believe Magnolia trees won't survive our winters. I have only seen them outdoors in the South. If you are wanting a potted one for indoors, any reputable florist/grower should be able to help you locate one.
Good luck!
What does evrybody think of the film "Magnolia"? What do you make of what happens?
It is one of my all time favourites, and I take something different away each time I watch it, but is the ultimate meaning of the film; sometimes these things DO just happen, get on with your life?
What does evrybody think of the film "Magnolia"? What do you make of what happens?
Magnolia is one of my all-time favourite movies, and yet I've only ever seen it twice! (I find it too emotionally demanding. I mean, c'mon, two cancer sufferers?!!)
I think the faux-documentary intro is staggeringly original, and the collection of fine performances rivals even the great Glengarry Glen Ross.
And, unlike Crash (but similar to Short Cuts), the multiple plot strands seem natural and not contrived.
The movie also got me into Aimme Mann in a big way (and her Bachelor No. 2 LP, in particular). In addition, the film also contains two (count them, two!!!) Supertramp songs - which is a treat.
The most poignant aspect for me though was how exhilirating I found the film. The experience is so similar to viewing Goodfellas, but because the subject matter concerns banal 'real-life' issues (family, sickness, etc), and not gangsters, people don't think about the technical virtuosity that Magnolia so obviously excels in.
Reply:I only saw it once and was a little freaked. It's one of those movies like Crash, which has a million characters and every character has a different story. I really didn't get it. The only thing clear is that Tom Cruise is a talk show host who talks against women.
Reply:I've seen it.. I thought it was weird .. I dont really recall the story but I do remember the rain of frogs - that was neat!
About 6 months ago I bought a similar boat (Laser) for 1250 with trailer, rigging and a spare set of sails.
" hi I'm Magnolia."
could depend on the last name I guess. but by it self its not on my list.
Reply:I love it! I'm totally into different names.. I don't personally care for Maggie though.. I once knew a little girl named Margoux(prnounced Mar-go).
Reply:I'm usually a fan of flower names, but this one just rubs me the wrong way. I don't know, it just doesn't sound too feminine, and the 'mag' part seems awfully harsh....
Reply:Yucky.
Reply:no, it's not a popular name here. and yes, it's a brand of ice cream. in my opinion, there's a lot more options to choose from. but if u insist this name, give her a nicer nickname, not maggie, please.. (maggi is a noodle %26amp; seasoning brand here). i think Lia is more sophisticated and smart-sounding.
Reply:Magnolia is a good name.
My teacher is named Magnolia too and we sometimes call her Maggie. And the name Magnolia is creates executive ambitions, we emphasize that it causes an emotional intensity that is hard to control.
But if you are named magnolia, you have a generous side to your nature as well, and like to share what you have with others.
So I love the name...so is my teacher who is also a friend.
Reply:Magnolia is a flower. Named after a guy. and somehow Milk of Magnesia comes up. I know this seasoning called Maggie. I ate it with all my food when I was a little kid. But Maggie sounds better than Magnolia. Kids will tease her and call her Magnet!
Reply:It woudl be fun if you had lilly Rose/Rosemarry lavender and such to go with it...but just one flower name nah
What is the film Magnolia really about?
Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia is about lives of different people connecting in a strange way and by a song. However, it is not clear to me what is connecting them, just a chance? Is really everything a matter of chance in the film?
What is the film Magnolia really about?
That is what this film is about and "Strange things happen all the time" are the best ways I can think of to describe the overall plot of the film. The story of a dozen people, on one incredible day, in one very wet valley, on Magnolia Avenue.
I could list reason, after reason, after reason why this is one of the finest films I've ever seen... I really could. From the fact that every cast member gives an oscar-worthy performance, to the fact that this film has upwards of 10 amazing sequences I have never seen before, and probably will never see again, in any film.
This film gets my highest recommendation and a definite 10. I say see it right now, and see it as many times as possible.
Reply:I could not figure this movie out either and the frogs at the end freaked me the flip out!
Reply:I thought it was about how death effects us all as they are all in someway connected to the man you dies in the movie and they are all in some way effeced by his death. In ancient Greek mythology the frog is asociated with death be let lose on the world. When the man dies it rains frogs and causes all of these people to come to a stand still. That is what I got from the movie.
We are thinking about moving to Magnolia, Texas, any thoughts?
I am looking for all the pros and cons.................
We are thinking about moving to Magnolia, Texas, any thoughts?
Magnolia is one of the fastest growing areas in the Houston suburban area. About 45 miles from Houston it will still take over an hour to commute into the city during heavy traffic. Though close by is the Woodlands area and Conroe and both are well established and nice. The area is at the bottom of the Piney Woods area of east Texas so is much more like Louisiana than most of Texas. There are nice lakes in the area for boating. The housing is still reasonable, and cost of living is just above the median for the US.
All in all a good choice.
Have a nice move!
Reply:Don't know what part of Texas that is. If it's near San Antonio or Austin, you'll probably like it.
"Magnolia" questions - What does the kids rap mean EXACTLY and why is the movie titled "Magnolia"?
I know the older brother is the killer but what does the rap itself mean? Or the title? Thanks!!
"Magnolia" questions - What does the kids rap mean EXACTLY and why is the movie titled "Magnolia"?
I don't know anything about the rap, however I can tell you what the title means. The movie Magnolia takes place in Los Angeles and the Valley in particular. Magnolia is a street that runs parallel to Ventura Blvd. in the later scenes of the movie and the frogs begin to rain down from the sky most of all the characters are on that street and it seems to be where their stories collide. In fact in one of the scenes you can make out the street signs.
i'm expecting a letter.
How long does it take 4 mail coming from magnolia al. to get to toledo oh. if it was mailed out on a monday?
Today is Friday and if was indeed mailed Monday, it should be here no later than today. Hope you receive what you are waiting for. But, people do not always send the mail when they say they do. If it is someone you know that did send it on Monday and it does not come by Saturday. You may want to contact the Post Office on Monday to put a trace on it.
Why is my magnolia trees leaves curling up and going brown,i water and feed reguly?
Could be you are giving them too much water as these trees originated from a hot dry climate. A lot of plants from hot countries are finding their way into our gardens and most of them tell you only water when soil is dry.
Why is my magnolia trees leaves curling up and going brown,i water and feed reguly?
Is it newly planted? If it is, is it in direct sunlight? If you are in the south, it's really hot right now, and having a new one in this heat is probably why. Just keep at it and make to put a fertilizer mix near the base. Good luck. If the tree is old, check the stems for any lichen or bugs that may be draining nutrients.
Reply:Excessive heat may be the problem.
Magnolia tree?
I live in the Mojave Desert near Lancaster %26amp; Palmdale, Ca. The winters get down into the 20's and the summers can reach 110 degrees. Which type of Magnolia tree will survive this type of climate?
Magnolia tree?
Call your local department of agriculture
Reply:I'm in inland Australia and have the same temperature range as you. I grow magnolias in my garden. I love Magnolia x soulangeana but find they burn when planted in a sun all day position but planted in the morning sun they thrive.
I also grow Magnolia grandiflora 'Exmouth' and Magnolia g. 'Little Gem'. I haven't had them in enough years to say with certainty but I think they won't reach their maximum heights in the heat, but are doing well in the full sun.
All are regularly watered and heavily mulched and apart from that are no trouble.
If you are looking for some excellent trees for you climate I can recommend:
Chinese elm (Ulmus parvifolia)
chinese pistachio (pistacia chinensis)
Pin Oak (Quercus palustris) - Yes only oak that I have found to like this temperature range
Fraxinus angustifolia (Raywood) - Claret Ash beautiful crimson leaves in autumn, an australian hybrid originally so likes the heat. %26amp; fraxinus excelsior - golden ash.
If you love something and want to give it a try just grow it in a bit less sun than usually recommended, I find most things grow if you have the water. Good Luck.
Reply:I'm afraid the magnolia tree would be a bit too delicate for California. These tree's however would probably work very well. A pussywillow, Wisteria(it can be cut back and it will grow as a bush or a tree, all you have to do is keep cutting back the leaves near the bottom of the bush.) There is also a tree called a Mock Magnolia tree, they have beautiful pink flower's on them and they are very hardy and love full sun. A Crape Myrtle tree is also good for full sun. A Mimosa is one of the toughest trees I've ever seen and it doesn't need any pampering. Then there is always the Palm Tree,Banana Tree,Bamboo Tree or a hardy cactus.
Reply:Just buy the most beautiful magnolia tree you can find. Plant it exactly like the directions say. I live in Texas And I see about 6 thriving just in my neighborhood (they are beautiful in bloom). It gets obout 106 here so its similar. Good luck keep asking around. Remember, just like the directions say mulch,hole size, everthing and water it like it's a religion.
Reply:dont use a magnolia, the leaves and the cones they produce will just cause u to remove it in a few years, try a bradford pare instead. a lot less messy
Reply:Check with your local nurseryman. But did you know that Magnolias are either dropping their leaves, cones, or their blooms. I have a neighbor who complains about the mess.
Is starlight magnolia a good flower?
you bet, ya' !!!! LOL
Hi, newest contact !!!
Is starlight magnolia a good flower?
Starlight Magnolias are gorgeous filling out the tree in early spring with beautiful white flowers. Once they fall on the ground it looks as though it snowed. Then it's time to rake the little beauties up. I rake them up in several large piles and by July they have almost dissappeared into compost to add into the garden.
Reply:Well sure it is.. if its got Magnolia in it ... its gotta be good.. my state tree is a magnolia and they smell so good..
Does anyone know the words to The Magnolia Tree?
This poem was a story about how he gives her the tree on their wedding, and the tree grows, and sees their children and grandchildren..and I think he dies in the end. It was so beautiful and so remarkable..The last line is 'The old Magnolia Tree..."
I tried a search a few months ago and found another, but not his one...someone else was also searching it..they said it was from the 60's or 50's and was first published in some Woman's Magazine...
I would LOVE the words of this poem..
Does anyone know the words to The Magnolia Tree?
If I'm thinking of the same poem, it is "The White Magnolia Tree" by Helen Deutsch. You can find it online at the link below. You can also hear a recitation by Helen Hayes, in whose book "A Gift of Joy" it appeared, on the second website below. Hayes' book is out of print, but you may be able to find a used copy. I'm unclear as to the relationship of Hayes to Deutsch.
THE WHITE MAGNOLIA TREE
By Helen Deutsch
The year when I was twenty-one
(John that year was twenty-three)
That was the year, that was the spring,
We planted the white magnolia tree.
"This tree," said John, "shall grow with us, And every year it will bloom anew.
This is our life. This is our love."
And the white magnolia grew and grew....
Oh, youth's a thing of fire and ice
And currents that run
Hot and white,
And its world is as bright
As the sun...
I was twenty-one...
And I wore a plume in my hat,
and we went to the movies and wept
over "Stella Dallas" and John sang
"Moonlight and Roses" (a little off
-key, but very nicely, really) and we
hurried through our crowded days and
beautiful plans, boundless ambitions
and golden decisions.
There is so much the young heart
clamors for: this it must have, and
that it cannot live without, and it must be all or nothing, for aren't we the masters of creation?
Oh, valiant and untamed were we,
When we planted the white magnolia tree!
And the white magnolia grew and grew,
Holding our love within its core,
And every year it bloomed anew,
And we were twenty-one no more.
No more untamed, no more so free,
Nor so young, nor so wild and
aflame were we.
Dearer to us then grew other things:
easy sleep, books, a day's quiet holiday, good talk beside a fire, the beauty of old faces....
We have known many things since then,
the death of a child and the bitter lesson that a heart, which breaks, must mend itself again (that it can and must be done) and what loyalty can mean and how real a word like courage can become and that solitude can be rich and gratifying and quite different from loneliness....
There is so little the serious heart
requires, friends, faith, a window open
to the world, pride in work well done,
and strength to live in a world at war
and still maintain the heart's own private peace....
Dear Heaven, I give thanks to thee
For the thinks I did not know before.
For the wisdom of maturity,
For bread, and a roof, and for
one thing more....
Thanks because I still can see
The bloom on the white magnolia tree!
Why won't my magnolia tree bloom?
it is a minature and 7 years old
Why won't my magnolia tree bloom?
My Magnolia is about 15 years old and had only a few blooms on it this year. Other years there were tons. I'm told it was because we had some very warm weather very early, then it got cold and stayed cold a fair amount of time. It's like the tree was tricked into thinking it was spring so it tried to bloom and they were killed by the cold. Just a thought to consider depending on what part of the country your in.
Reply:r u giving it the right attention..maybe its not a magnolia tree..
Reply:ur not holding ur mouth right! give it some bloom booster, and it might bloom when it's next turn comes around!
Reply:My experience tells me you need to pore beer on it
Reply:Sometimes it can take between 8-15 years for a magnolia tree to bloom. You may want to try fertilizing the tree, and having the soil tested to make sure it isn't lacking any essential nutrient.
Reply:It's usually an early bloom time, even when there is still frost, but if you are in zone 7, it might only go every 3 years.
Reply:not enough water?
I just planted a true Southern Magnolia.?
I planted it in my front yard, there is not much of anything to shelter it from the cold wind in the winter. This is a true Southern Magnolia, not a northern hardy version like a Brackens or DD Blanchard. It's about 6 feet tall and I covered it with 3 inches of Redwood Mulch to preserve moisture now and keep it warmer in the winter. My question is, is there anything I can do now to strengthen it's root system (thereby strengthening it's leaves and the tree as well) before out first freezes start (around the middle of October, I'm near St. Louis, MO and on the map it lists my area as an adaptable range, plus I bought it at a local nursery and the lady said it can take temps down to 0, which we rarely get. Any advice, suggestions are appreciated!
suggest that for the first winter or two you wrap the trunk against sun damage and splitting.... loosely with burlap will do fine.....
I have a magnolia tree what type of fertiliser can i use?
Horse shite
I have a magnolia tree what type of fertiliser can i use?
I would use tree fertilizer spikes specially designed for trees. Typically you install these at the drip line of the tree around the tree. 2 or 3 should do, but consult the packaging specification.
Reply:you would be far better putting a mulch around the base of the tree rather than thinking about fertilisers
Reply:Fertilize with liquid fertilizer every 3-4 weeks, preferably an acidic type of fertilizer for the first year or two when small!
I did not know that. That is really sad. This just goes to show that the government does not care about those people and where they end up. I hope that if they tear down magnolia that they will build better apartments and have the same people move back in. Now that would only be right. Juvenile really does love magnolia it is all on his Cd's I know he will try hard to save his home
Has anyone ever had a wedding or reception at the Magnolia Plantation in Louisiana?
My cousin got married there 8 years ago, all I can tell you is that the food was good and the place was decorated very nice.
Reply:I went to a wedding reception there years ago, and remember it was nice. You probably need to speak with a rep on the phone to go over details you need to know. Most have packages and variables that could conform to your needs....but they are reputable .............
What are road conditions around Magnolia, Texas on Farm to Market roads?
FM 1488 has had wonderful reconstruction because of the high school that they built across from Spur 149 in 2002. The other side of 1488 that runs to Waller is in just as good of shape. FM 1774 has also had rennovations, since they have installed the newer high school in 2005.(The intersection at the school has broadened.) 249 coming from Tomball turns into 1774, and is in a basically good condition. I have never actually encountered ice on the road, though. It hasn't snowed there since my elem. school days, and on rare occasions it has been known to flood. But closer to Hempstead and Waller on 1488, not 1774. Some rural roads are a bit bumpy, but not too bad.
What are road conditions around Magnolia, Texas on Farm to Market roads?
Due to the weather there right now, roads may be a little icy. But on normal days most farm roads are in great condition in the Magnolia area. There aren't too many dirt roads anymore if that's what you're wondering. What area or road in particular are you wondering about?
Reply:Patricia, I'm in SW Okla. and as you know 2 ice storms hit. You also know north TX Farm to Market roads are nice and paved,BUT icy. You NEED to check with the TEXAS HIGHWAY PATROL and also look up [or get directory assistance] the
COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE as they will have deputies who have been patrolling.
Call CITY HALL Tuesday and ask for the TOWN POLICEMAN'S number.
Between the Secretary who answers at city hall and the local policeman (coupled with the info from the first para), you should have a safe trip.
DO NOT FORGET TO CHECK THE LATEST WEATHER FORECAST AND KEEP YOUR AUTO RADIO ON THE CORRECT STATION!!!
Why does my dog love to chew on dried Magnolia Blossoms?
He likes them! Dogs are omnivores and some enjoy grazing and fresh greens and plants in their diets. My pitbull loves to snack on baby birch trees and rose petals... The Magnolia blossoms are fine, you do want to make sure he doesn't have access to toxic plants like poinsettias though.
Why does my dog love to chew on dried Magnolia Blossoms?
Maybe the sweet smell atracts ur dog.
Reply:maybe he likes the taste and the crunch when theyre dry
Saucer Magnolia not growing?
We have a saucer magnolia that is pretty much the same size as when we planted it several years ago. It's not dying, the leaves all look fine, but it's not growing or flowering.
We recently put mulch around it and it has been raining a lot, but no dice as of yet.
We're in zone 8.
Any ideas?
Saucer Magnolia not growing?
Here is what Magnolias need:
Careful Siting: Pick a location where the shallow, fleshy roots won't be damaged by digging or by soil compaction from constant foot traffic. Magnolias also don't like to be crowded!!
Soil: They appreciate fairly rich, well-drained soil, neutral to slightly acidic.
Mulching: Keep a cooling mulch over the roots.
Watering: Irrigate deeply and thoroughly, but don't waterlog the soil or the tree will drown.
Fertilizing: Feed trees if new growth is scanty or weak. Use a slow release product as magnolias are prone to salt damage.
A Saucer Magnolia usually needs to be 3 to 5 years old before it will bloom.
Good Luck!!
Reply:Strange...is it in the right place? They need fertile, well-drained soil and in full sun to partial shade. Soil should be acidy. Is there anything in the ground that could hinder it's roots growing? They're quite slow growing but i'm sure you should have seen some difference by now.
Reply:It is very very slow growing tree. Try to fertilize with the sticks..it is a slow release fertilizer lasting many months... I use the vigoro palm tree, my Magnolia tree is about 7 feet...Depending of yours, break the stick in 2 pieces.
I need the name of fertilizer for magnolia trees with phosphatos in it?
Any home garden store will have a brand of fertilizer, especially for "flowering shrubs and trees". Check labels. I feed my magnolia the same as my azalias.
I need the name of fertilizer for magnolia trees with phosphatos in it?
FERTILIZING:
When it comes time to fertilize your Magnolias you should use and acidic based fertilizer. This will be the same fertilizer you use on your Rhododendrons. This fertilizer can come in liquid or granular form. I use the liquid for a quick response or to just green up the foliage. The granular fertilizers are slower but longer lasting. While which manufacturer's fertilizer you chose is up to you the best I have found is an all natural product called Holly Tone™. I also use this type of fertilizer to feed my Variegated Pagoda Dogwood, Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Blue Hollies, Christmas Roses, Conifers, Hydrangeas and Magnolias. I feed my spring flowering Magnolias just as they finish blooming and again lightly in late June. My summer flowering Magnolias are fertilized in early May and again lightly in June.
INSECTS:
I have not had to spray my Magnolias for insects but on occasion I have heard of them getting Magnolia scale. The control is to scrape off the scale, scrub them off with a nail brush, or spray with a systemic insecticide following the label directions. In this area Magnolia scale is in the crawler stage in August. This is when it is the easiest to control with a spray.
PRUNING AND DEAD HEADING:
I have found with the spring flowering Magnolias that a light corrective pruning should be done after flowering in the beginning of June. The summer flowering Magnolias I have yet to have to prune. It is my guess that they will also be pruned in early June once active grow has started. Dead Heading is not necessary with all Magnolias in fact many of them naturally shed their spent flower heads. I do dead head my Magnolias though only when they are very young. I do this in order to encourage growth not seed production. Speaking of spent flowers, remember that all Magnolias will cover the ground with their spent flower petals. These should be removed for appearance sake, but also for disease and insect control.
COMPANION PLANTS:
My favourite companion plants to Magnolias are Hostas, Periwinkle, Baltic Ivy, Variegated Persian Ivy, Christmas Rose, Impatiens, Non Stop Begonias, Hydrangeas and Daffodils.
Recommended Magnolias Varieties:
Magnolia stellata: This variety blooms in our area ( Zone 6) about the middle of April. Star Magnolias grow to be 15 to 20 feet high and 10 to 15 feet wide. This happens fairly slowly but always plan for it to become a reasonably large flowering shrub or small tree. The Star Magnolia has fragrant white flowers 3 to 4 inches in diameter. They start blooming at a very young age.
A balanced fertilizer with equal parts nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium applied annually will help keep it healthy. Use a granular, slow release fertilizer that will nourish the plant as it grows throughout the season. The spring after planting is a good time to begin fertilizing.
There are two other varieties of Magnolia stellata that you should consider. They are Royal Star and Waterlilly. Both of these Magnolias have pink buds fragrant white flowers with more petals than the Magnolia stellata.
Magnolia X loebneri ' Leonard Messel ' is best described as a pink star magnolia. The flowers are actually fuchsia with a purple-pink stripe and wavy petals. Leonard will be larger than the Magnolia stellata selections but really quite compact and faster growing. It usually blooms in my garden (Zone 6) about a week later than the white star magnolias.
Magnolia X soulangiana were the most common group of magnolias planted in Canada. In other words when you see a large old pink or purple magnolia it is a member of this group. On average they grow 20 to 30 feet high and just as wide. It grows 10 to 15 feet in just 10 years.
Magnolia liliiflora is now the most commonly planted group of pink magnolias planted now. It is the Little Girl Hybrids which are responsible for this swing in popularity. Their upright habit produces a larger salable plant sooner. Generally they attain a height of 10 to 15 feet. Their flowers are reddish purple with a lighter pink to white on the inside. The Little Girl Hybrids bloom in May. So here are the girls to look for: Jane, Judy, Pinkie, Randy, Ricki, Ann, Betty and Susan. My favourites Ann and Susan.
Magnolia acuminata 'Elizabeth' is a compact pyramidal tree to who knows what height. It has large primrose-yellow fragrant flowers in May. It is suppose to be hardy to Zone 4. In my garden Elizabeth has up to 10 inch leaves and grows 12 to 15 inches per year.
Magnolia grandiflora 'Edith Bogue' is a Southern Magnolia. It has evergreen leaves that look like a Rubber Tree ( Ficus elastica ). In fact passers-by have often asked how I can grow a Rubber Tree outside year round. It has a pyramidal form eventually reaching 30 feet high and 15 feet wide. Edith has 8 to 10 inch wide very fragrant white flowers throughout the summer. You should always plant Edith out of the wind. It has proven itself hardy in my Zone 6 garden over the last two years with no protection.
