True Southern Magnolia question?

I have a Southern Magnolia (the true version, not a hybrid)so it has light colored leaves. I live in St. Louis, MO and it's been planted in my front yard for a month or so now. It has only lost a couple leaves since I transplanted it but I haven't seen any growth. My question is, can it take the winter here? Should the leaves stay green, and if not, does this mean it has died?

True Southern Magnolia question?
It is good for zones 7 to 9. Sometimes plants will do okay a bit outside of their best zones but only time will tell in those cases.

Magnolias tend to be slow growers with new growth usually in the spring.
