I have a magnolia grandiflora. How is the best way to prune it?

Should have been done when dormant! Leave it to bloom and leaf-out. Make sure this grand tree has the proper fert and pest controls throughout the season.

In Late fall, after the leaves have turned colors, you can begin the process. Snip the outer limbs to the shape you need. Use a Sharpie Marking Pen, if you can, to mark any branch you wish to remove. When the tree is dormant remove those limbs. Good Luck

jerry gave you some good advice . you can cut out dead wood anytime , but these trees don't like a lot of pruning .
