I have about a 40 foot magnolia tree in my yard, I don't know the specific variety. It's currently blooming, but losing a lot of leaves. (I'm raking up a trash bag full every week.) I live in South Mississippi, so climate shouldn't be an issue (they're native here.) It's getting plenty of water, and I have some fertilizer spikes I just put in along the dripline. I'm a notorious plant killer, so it's making me nervous. :)
Is it normal for a blooming tree to lose leaves in early summer? Or should I be worried about the number of woodpeckers that come to my bird feeder?

A serious question, I'm sure, but the answer has to be a resounding "NO" if you are asking about the Magnolia Grandiflora. Just about its only negative characteristic is the fact that the leaves seem to fall all year long and blow all over the lawn. In truth, they fall more at certain times of the year, one of which is the time when it is blooming. Most men who usually do most of the mowing of lawns hate the magnolias; I think one of the reasons the Grandiflora leaves are so bothersome is that they are thick, tough, large and slow to decompose. When you rake them, they take up lots of space in a bag or trash can.
The leaves fall off along the branches as the new growth comes on. Looking underneath, or inside a magnolia tree, you see lots of branches that are bare except for at the ends. Its just the natural process of the tree's growth. So, if your tree is losing a tremendous amount of leaves, especially in the spring, that is normal. They have to fall off to make room for new leaves.
Also, an unusually dry season will will cause the tree to lose leaves; even cause them to drop a year after the dry year because the tree was damaged from drought.
SO, DON"T WORRY ABOUT UR GRANDIFLORA..... IT"S PERFECTLY FINE.

i went there today to check out some speakers and i noticed that the bose speakers were noware near anyother speaker. I asked the salesman why and he said that bose paid extra money for that spot away from the other speakers. is this the same at your magnolia home theater

Little gem Magnolia dying after planting, transplant shock or what?>?
I just planted five little gem magnolias around my yard about 2 weeks ago. Now they are all brown with very few green leaves left. I mixed the soil with peat and manure and also planttone and have been keeping it on a regular watering schedule. Also, I have planted several other plants including rhods and azaleas and they are doing fine. Now, the reason I think it is transplant shock is when I planted them I only had time to do three first then I waited a couple days to do the other two. When I planted the other two I noticed the ones in the containers looked beautiful but the ones in the ground were starting to wilt. What should I do!? These are mature plants the came from 15 gallon containers.

did you plant too deep?
you should be able to see the trunk getting slightly wider at the bottom before it reaches the soil if it is the same width at soil level and a foot or so above it has been planted too deeply. remove this soil.
If that's not the problem then water them really deeply (don't fertilize)and hope for the best, wilting is not dying, but once trees reach the death spiral they don't recover.

I'm afraid it's because of the cold weather and strong winds.
Magnolias don't normally flower quite this early but the very mild Winter has brought them into flower and the latest bout of cold weather has killed them. They won't recover this year but you should have a good display next year. If you have some unopened buds, you may just have a few late blooms.

My tree is about 2 feet away from my assfault drive way and one foot away from my concreat patio. The tree is about 3 years old. I would really like to keep it where it is.

Here in the tundric regions of zone 5, we have some Magnolias which are not much more than glorified shrubs, but we also have tree forms.
If the plant is young, and can be handled (at 3years, you probably can), I'd move it. It might not lift the concrete, but when the branches reach out 10' from where they are, will you be able to use the drive? If you cut them back, it won't have (many) flowers on that side... and the overall look will be compromised.
If it is a tree form, I believe that it could damage the asphalt.
Do it in the fall, as the tree begins to go dormant.

If it is still small, you should have no trouble as long as you get the root ball or main root. Dig 2 foot out from trunk and down to get main root. Place in burlap or heavy paper sack with the dirt that came with roots. Transplant asap ensuring all air is out of hole. DON'T let roots dry out and keep out of sun.

It's unlikely you'll get anything at all the first year. Forsythias don't "flower" in the conventional manner, but the buds turn a bright yellow before they fall off and expose the green leaves. They are generally the first of spring. If you already have lots of green leaves, then the bright yellow buds have already fallen off for the season. Your magnolia may have suffered a bit of shock in the planting process and you may have to just wait a year before you get the first blooms.
Sorry you won't get the color you want this year but I you have great taste in plants! Those are two of my favorites.

And be sure to add a little about fragrance, breezes, and whatnot. Remember to give something for each of the senses! (Hearing, Smelling, Touch, Sight, etcc)

Water will dramatically effect the growth rate of any tree. Also, with Magnolias, allow plenty of room for their roots to grow. They grow on the surface so keep that in mind. Otherwise they will loose limbs and not be nearly as healthy. I have about 20 in my yard.

Magnolia is a medium density wood. When dry it is a good firewood. It has no peculiar smell when burning. Two years ago I felled, bucked and split a 60+ year old Magnolia Grandiflora that was threatening to crash onto a friend's house. She uses wood heat and was very satisfied with the wood. Ash and heat content is similar to Douglas Fir.

Star Magnolia Bush Problems?
I have a Star Magnolia bush, installed 3 years ago, and there are entire branches were the leaves are drying out and turning brown. It has not been abnormally hot or dry. This has not happened before. Any ideas.
I have been pulling the leaves off, but not the branches, as they are still green inside.

Star Magnolia Bush Problems?
Star Magnolia are quite pest free, though they can be affected by several problems. One problem common to Star Magnolia is root girdling (circling roots). Though this could be your problem, the symptoms you describe do not exactly fit.
Sometimes Star Magnolia can be infected with a canker. This fungal infestation causes dark sunken areas on the stems and branches, eventually girdling the stem and branch and results in death of the stem or branch. Look for these darken sunken areas on the branched affected on your tree.
Another possibility is verticillium wilt. This soil borne fungal disease enters the roots and propagates in the vascular system of the tree. A common symptom is leaves will start to brown on whole branches. If you have verticllium wilt, you should be able to see a light- to dark-green streaking of the sapwood when viewed on an infected branch with the bark peeled away. If the branch or plant is cut and the cross section examined, the discoloration may appear as a ring. The vascular discoloring often occurs with the advance of the fungus or the fungal spores through the sapwood except sometimes in the early stages of infection.
Although some plants may die quickly, more commonly it takes one or more years to die. Trees and shrubs with only a few wilted branches during a growing season may become more severely infected the following year. Some may recover and show no more symptoms in the following years. In other cases, the plant may develop symptoms several years later after the initial infection.
What can you do for veticillium wilt? Avoid root and collar injury. Keep your magnolia vigorous. Trees and shrubs killed by Verticillium wilt should be removed with as much of the roots intact as possible. Plants showing early symptoms should be watered and fertilized. We had one many years ago we offered it to a local arbouretum (excuse spelling) as it was too big for the garden. They came and dug the biggest hole around the roots you could imagine and took it away as far as I know some 12 years later its still growing strong.
Make sure you have the hole ready for it well watered and manure or feed in there. Dig around the roots but make sure you don't hit the roots and hopefully it will like its new home. Not sure how big yours is but ours was about 6 foot and it needed 4 men to move it.

"Jane" is a hybrid of the Japanese Magnolia (along with the whole series collectively know as "The Girls". - including Rikki, Alexandrina, and others)
Jane will not get as big as the original parent plant (maybe 10-12'). And the flowers are generally more purplish - whereas the original has more white in the flower (white %26amp; pink, or white %26amp; purple)

What is a July Magnolia... tree, bush or what?
I won a 15 gallon July Magnolia. It has been on my patio in the same plastic container it came in, since April. I have no idea where to plant it or what care it needs. I went on the internet, but nothing came up for a "July Magnolia". Can you give me any information, please?

Depends on what they're doing- if you have bees living in the tree, then contact your ag extension folks for a list of local beekeepers- one of them can probably remove the swarm from the tree for you, and would be happy to do so for free, given how much bees cost these days.
If you're upset about the bees feeding on flowers (though I didnt' think bees could feed from magnolias), then your solutions are either to cut off all the flowers, just cut the tree down, or get yourself one of the more exotic magnolia trees which has a longer flower stem (some of the Japanese varieties work)- Honeybees have short tongues and if they can't get at the flower, they'll leave the tree alone..

I have a small orchard. I have tried human hair, smelly cheap soaps, fishing line around the property, with cans hung on it with a couple pebbles in them, a lot of things.
The most effective deterrent for a small area(like a 1 acre or less lot), is a proximity light arrangement, like you would mount on your garage. When something passes in front of it, the light goes on. I set up a couple of lights(Woods, avail at walmart for 40 bucks) to cross-fire my orchard. I took the bulb out of one, and put in a plug, so I could connect a radio. I set the timer on the light for 1 minute, and set the radio on the nastiest, loudest rock station I could find. GOODBYE DEER.

You will find lots of suggestions (some are above) for keeping deer away--I've listed some below, too. But, deer will quickly figure out that there isn't any danger associated, and they will move in for the tasty treats anyway. You need to rotate solutions, and keep the deer confused!
Anyway, try any of these, at random:
Sprinkle cayenne pepper
Sprinkle moth balls
Fill a sprayer bottle with water, add chopped habanero peppers, with seeds, in a tied up nylon stocking--spray the plants with the pepper spray
Human hair
Have a dog owner save dog hair from brushing, and put that around your garden
Bath soap shavings
Blood meal (available at garden supply stores)
There are also commercial products (sprays) available to purchase.
The key is keeping the deer confused and thus, afraid. If you live within a city, call your animal control officer and see if he/she can offer any other advice. Sometimes, problem animals can be removed. If you live in the country, identify the landowner where the deer bed, and see if they will offer hunters permission this fall. Reducing the population reduces the pressure on the deer to wander into residential areas to eat!

Reply:Try human hair.Spread the hair close as you can to the plants or around the garden. The reason this works is because deer are afraid of humans and the hair has a strong scent of a human. You will be able to find lots of free human hair at the place you get your hair cut.I would recommend putting the hair in the lawn around the garden that way it wont look weird in the garden. You might even want to try placing the hair in something so it wont blow away then place these containers around the garden.
P.S. you will have to replace the hair regularly because it will at some time blow away and loose its scent.
Reply:I stray everything in my garden with a jalapeno/water mixture after I lost all my tomato and broccoli plants a few years ago. They ate EVERYTHING in my garden except my pepper plants. What I do is take whole, fresh jalapenos and blend them up in a blender or food processor with water (just a little at first and make sure you don't get it in your eyes). after you have it blended really well, strain it to remove all solid pieces of jalapeno. Add water but not too much or you will over dilute it. Spray on plants every few days. This has worked for me ever since.

ok i have been in the nursery work for over 20 years in warren co. tennessee and do not do as the guy above me says cutting the roots then waiting to dig it will let in fungus a 10 year old tree you will have to have a machine to dig it dont try this yourself need to wait till fall and have a machine to do this for you they will also replant to trust me me and my husband have been digging trees a long time and if you try this you are taking a chance of killing it.
Reply:Yes you can. But I would wait until this fall to do it. What you need to due about the end of August is root prune the tree. that means taking a flat spade and going around the perimeter of the tree at the drip line of the branches cutting all the roots. Then in late September find the spot you would like to move it to. Then dig a hole about twice the the size of the root ball on the tree and as deep as the roots of the tree now. Dig out your tree and move into the new place. Fill the sides of the hole with mixture of peat moss and clean top soil. Go to your garden shop and pick up a bottle of vitamin B-12 this will help with transplant shock. Water the tree for a couple of days while the weather is still warm-and stake it out to prevent it from falling over. Keep it well watered into the winter, fertilize the tree in late December, early January and when the spring starts to come around keep on eye on it for water needs . Or you can call a tree moving company this fall to due all the work for you.

Can I cut a branch off of my magnolia tree so that I can eventually plant it elsewhere?
Hi:
Cutting a branch off a Magnolia tree won't work to plant some where else. The root system of a Magnolia is wide and once the Magnolia is established, you can damage the tree by pruning it. Magnolias are a plant specimen that only should be pruned when they are younger and done in the summer, after bloom time.
Seeds are very slow to germinate and you can take a young Magnolia can be propaged in summer after the bud forms. You can propagate by taking three to four inch green cuttings. The shoots should be put in a sand base light weight soil and you should mist oftern.
You can also do graphing on an establish strong Magnolia. I am a landscaper and design and I usually don't recommend doing anything to your established Magnolia unless you have the right environment to propagate or graph.
I hope this has helped some. The Magnolia is one of my favorite trees here in the south. If you have a healthy one, enjoy and don't prune it if it is well established.

Reply:Here is my suggestion; Magnolia or maybe Navajo white looks great on walls in a satin finish with semi gloss white trim, baseboards and doors. Paint the ceiling with a plain white ceiling paint.
Reply:There are so many shades of emulsion that resemble magnolia, that it can get confusing. We chose Antique Lace, which is warmer than magnolia, but looks great with white ceilings, skirting's and doors.
White Walls and ceilings can look clinical, but produce bright reflected light, which is great for pictures and ornaments.

Spring. As soon as the buds start to swell. Apply the fertilizer about the same distance from the trunk as the branches spread. Work into the soil if possible and water slow and deep to avoid washing it away. A very young tree 1/2 pound ( maybe a cup ) every month until early summer. A general purpose fertilizer is fine. Something like 5-10-10 or even 10-20-10. Use less of the more concentrated. The higher Phoshoorous ( middle number ) promotes flowers. Avoid feeding in the fall. If you stimulate growth too late it is more easily damaged by frost.

Water lightly daily, then increase as the plants grow. You may choose to put them all in one large container, but I recommend putting a few seeds in smaller pots. Hope this helps!

I planted a mature 6' tall butterfly magnolia last fall in my back yard where it's exposed to the full sun.
The soil is hard solid clay so it doesn't drain very well. Until now the tree doesn't produce any flower. The leaves doesn't look healthy and it doesn't grow well. What should I do to to help the tree grows better and flowers next year?

well it sounds like you didn't give the tree its best choices for growing areas, but in any case you should be able to keep it growing by improving the soil a bit next spring and by feeding it a good quality neutral fertilizer like 8-8-8--as far as flowering goes though you should actually see flowers even if its not doing so well as flowers usually show even heavier on stressed plant as it is natures way of reproducing, and once a plant begins to stress out it tends to try and reproduce---thats why when a plant is being grown for a flower show that the grower will artificially stress it out with either girdling or some other method----try using superphosphate this fall which will normally slow the upper growth of the tree to initiate more root growth--that tends to send that same signal to the plant---------------good luck --blanco

Why didn't my magnolia tree produce flowers this year?

A branch from a neighboring tree fell on it last summer %26amp; broke a branch off. I have noticed a bunch of new limbs sprouting from the break.
Also, we did have a unusually cold spring, but I don't think we got any frost when the flowers should have been blooming.

Here in NE Ohio, we had a major freeze the first week in April. A lot of Magnolias were just about to bloom and the flowers were killed. We had temps of 80 degrees one day followed by three nights of lower 20's. Our neighbor's Magnolia didn't have any flowers on it, either. Our Redbud and Dogwood didn't have any flowers, either, so we expect you experienced the same as the low temps were widespread. Barring another spring like last year, the trees should bloom again next year.

Reply:By any chance, did you fertilize the grass under/around it? High-nitrogen fertilizer such as that used for lawns can inhibit flowering in many plants. If that isn't the case, then I suggest contacting a tree surgeon to have a look at the tree if it is a large and valuable plant, to see what might be the problem. Also, contact nurseries in the area; if there WAS frost in your area at a critical time, I suspect they will be aware of it and know that MANY magnolias didn't bloom.

Should the tree not bloom at all this summer or fall contact your neighbor for a homeowners claim of damages. At best you can be friendly and expect a minimum payment of less than $200. On contact with the insurance demand complete removal of your existing tree, roots included, plus the replacement.
Let the tree be. If it blooms the second bloom get a basic
10-20-10 with minerals fert spikes. You will need to place these outside the dripline of the tree at the manuf. specs for distance. If you notice any other die-back on the tree, increased insect activity, or any fungi, contact your neighbor immediately. Insurance is what this is about - Insure both yourself and your property.

I have a magnolia tree in my yard in Florida is at least 40 feet high..They require no maintence whatever if you prefer, they are hearty...I have trimmed maybe not over 12 or 15 lower branches off of them in a total of 6 years... I like to water mine and throw a little fertilizer now and then..but they will survive without it..Maybe if you buy one to transplant in your yard..you migth want to "baby" it the first full season..

I have a magnolia tree in my yard in Florida is at least 40 feet high..They require no maintence whatever if you prefer, they are hearty...I have trimmed maybe not over 12 or 15 lower branches off of them in a total of 6 years... I like to water mine and throw a little fertilizer now and then..but they will survive without it..Maybe if you buy one to transplant in your yard..you migth want to "baby" it the first full season..

You don't mention which magnolia variety you're thinking of - some of them can grow very tall and would dwarf the Quince.
If you want them to complement each other, try planting them nearby, avoiding the taller Magnolia shading the Quince too much. You could consider some evergreen plant(s) which would add winter interest too. Remember, these plants can live for decades and their root systems will expand, alongside their above ground growth -greater competition for nutrients and water too.

Hi taff Magnolia Susan is a decidious shrub ie drops its leaves in autumn. bushy and upright with large mid-green leaves. From mid-spring to midsummer, narrow goblet-shaped, fragrant flowers emerge from slender, dark purple-red buds. These open to slightly twisted petals of purple-red on the outside and paler on the inside.
Position: full sun or partial shade
Flowering period: April to June
Flower colour: fragrant, purple-red fully hardy
Garden care: Requires minimal pruning. Remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches after flowering. Plant in a sheltered spot, adding plenty of peat to the planting hole. Mulch in spring .

Give it time and it will grow back. However you should check to make sure the roots are not to wet. Take a stick and put it down in the ground next to the tree about 6" and if the dirt sticks to the stick, it is getting to much water. Also Magnolias don't like there roots touched. I would plant the tree in the ground. Mix the soil with some good compost, plant the tree and add mulch.

some plants are very easy to root and dont need rooting hormone at all but magnolia's are very difficult to root, even with high doses of rootone or talc. some species of magnolias are just about impossible, they loose juvenility early in new growth. most cultivars are grafted on rootstock since they do take to grafts better. im guessing your talking about M grandiflora (southern magnolia). its not impossible to root but success is usually around 10-20% and has to be from very new growth, before it hardens. but it cant hurt to try - keep it damp and warm (above 70f) in sand/peat. maybe dip the roots in alcohol prior to rooting powder. good luck.

Should have been done when dormant! Leave it to bloom and leaf-out. Make sure this grand tree has the proper fert and pest controls throughout the season.
In Late fall, after the leaves have turned colors, you can begin the process. Snip the outer limbs to the shape you need. Use a Sharpie Marking Pen, if you can, to mark any branch you wish to remove. When the tree is dormant remove those limbs. Good Luck

When planting magnolias dig in as much compost as possible and work the soil in an area twice the diameter of the root ball of the plant. Place the plant in the hole then put in a strong stake before back filling so that the roots are not damaged by putting it in afterward.
Magnolias like a cool root zone so a good mulch after planting will pay dividends. Watch the plant does not get too dry in the first season since magnolias spend the first year from planting getting settled in. If they get too dry they will tend to sulk.
If there is some concern about bad drainage, plant your magnolia in a slightly raised bed so it does not sit in a pool of wet soil. If you want to plant a magnolia near water, make sure the plant has 40 - 50 centimetres of well prepared and aerated soil above the water table to get itself established in. It will appreciate the close proximity of the extra water, but let it decide how close it wants to put its roots to it.
When transplanting a magnolia it is best to move as large a block of undisturbed soil as possible and the resulting stress will be proportionally less. If the root ball gets disturbed or even shaken out completely, then the plant will benefit from a reduction of branches by at least a third. Evergreen species should be root-pruned in autumn before tranplanting, and deciduous species are best moved when dormant, though they can be treated as evergreens and root-pruned for shifting in the autumn, as long as their growth has matured when the root-pruning process starts. If you have to move one in growth, trim out all the active growing tips, and if possible spray with an anti-dessicant spray at label rates.

Is Magnolia Little Gem hardy in norther Ohio?
I have Little gem planted in my yard but the growth in stunded or very small. Most of the leaves are small or not just developed. I have fertilize it with miracal grow and slow release fertilizer, but nothing seems to make it grow. I have watered it also, but it doesn't help. Does anyone have any ideas to help this plant? I don't think it will make it another winter. The main trunk it still green, so it is still alive. Help!!!

Take a very light weight pottining soil, (no bark) and add some humas and vermiculite to the soil. Add warm to hot water and mix well. Put the soil almost to the top of the small pot and cover the seed just enough where you can't see it. Water regularly and once it has become a plug, (bigger size) transplant it into a big pot. Once its roots are well established and there is some good growth, go ahead and plant it in the ground.

True Southern Magnolia question?
I have a Southern Magnolia (the true version, not a hybrid)so it has light colored leaves. I live in St. Louis, MO and it's been planted in my front yard for a month or so now. It has only lost a couple leaves since I transplanted it but I haven't seen any growth. My question is, can it take the winter here? Should the leaves stay green, and if not, does this mean it has died?
