Why have all the leaves fallen off our brand new sweet bay magnolia trees?

We just purchased 2 eight ft. tall Sweetbay magnolias. They were planted on the south west corner of our house according to a landscaping plan we had drawn up. Within three weeks now, most of the leaves have fallen off. The trees look so sad. Is this normal for transplanted magnolias? They were being kept in a hot house when we bought them. It's spring here in kansas, so not too warm or too cold as of yet.

The change from hot house to the outside may have been a big shock from them, or they may have dried out temporarily.

With care you will probably find that the leaves grow back. As mentioned do not fertilize. Buy some seaweed extract (Seasol or another brand), fantastic tonic, that prevents transplant shock and encourages root growth. Every time you plant new plants water in with this.

Don't overwater but make sure plants do not dry out and water deeply as they are large plants.

Plants can loose their leaves as a survival means, you will probably find with attention the leaves will return.
Reply:return them if there's a guarantee with them.... no reason you should spend good money on a plant and then have to spend more time and energy and money to 'nurse it back to health'....

if you did everything right when you planted them, then the nursery needs to compensate you.....
Reply:Call the people who sold these trees to you and find out what is happening and if this is normal.

They might be in shock. Only time will tell. Do not fertilize. Keep up with your watering.
