Mine is not doing well. No flowers at all this year, it's second year.
I need advise on soil, placement for sun and moisture of soil.
What are the maximum growing conditions for a young magnolia tree?
Magnolias like full sun but are finicky when it comes to watering. It is easy to over-water. In addition to the expected results of over-watering, it will seriously wash away the nutrients that magnolias need to grow to full potential. I live in SC and my Magnolia has been in the ground (transplanted from a sapling with just two leaves) for about five years. I've not had a bloom yet, bu that's not abnormal. I've had very, very healthy growth and the tree has gained about four feet in horizontal growth.
By the time your tree reaches 2nd year growth, it should be able to sustain it's on growth, although it wouldn't hurt to perhaps give it a regular dose of miracle growth or some other well-rounded fertilizer. By all means do not over water the plant, as this will wash precious nutrients down below the root line and actually be detrimental to plant growth.
Good luck
Reply:Magnolias use about the same amount of water as any other tree of the same size. Daily watering of any established tree is detrimental to the roots. Infrequent, but deep, irrigation is best. This means to water thouroughly until it has soaked down at least two feet if possible. Even in warm climates, you should not have to rewater for at least a week. Magnolias, as most landscape trees, do best in full sun. Do not fertilize the tree, especially with nitrogen. This element promotes vegetative growth (leaves) but delays flowering. The soil usually provides ample fertilizer. A two-year old tree would not be expected to flower each year. Give it a little more time, and good care, and the flowers will return.
Reply:Magnolias take an incredible amount of water. They ahve such succulent leaves and huge, moist flowers, water is the top priority. Full sun is fine. But if you are ina dry area, it may not work w/o daily watering from a sokaer or drip hose.
In places wehre the soil is moist (lower South), Magnolias will often gobble up all the water in the area, causing grass and shrubs to fail, and still may not get enough water if they are looking pekid. They kinda have to be "lone rangers" to do well.
I'm pretty sure your problem is purely lackof water. They are otherwise a pretty hearty tree.
