The holes start about 18 inches above the ground and go around in circles, evenly spaced up several feet. Does anyone know what is causing them and what I can do about them?
I just noticed that my magnolia tree has little round holes all over the trunk, what is happening?
Probably Woodpeckers or Sapsuckers. Not much you can do, unless you are willing to sit with a hose and wait. They feed mostly early morning.
Reply:If the holes are tiny, perfectly rounded and in alignment I'm quite sure they are caused by a "Yellow-bellied Sapsucker". Not much you can do about it but take heart, I honestly don't believe they will kill your tree.

There's not much you can do about them except put some kind of barrier around the trunk if there are enough to damage the tree.
