What is a late blooming magnolia that will grow in Zone 5?
The later the better. Specific growing area is Indianapolis. Anyone have any suggestions?
What is a late blooming magnolia that will grow in Zone 5?
No Magnolia that grows in zone 5 is a late bloomer and differencies between the species are slight. The little girl series (Ann, Betty, Jane, Judy, Pinkie, Randy, Ricki, and Susan) where all expressly bred to produce a series of Magnolia with later bloom times. The Star Magnolia will bloom slightly later than a Saucer. A Saucer will bloom later than a Merrill Magnolia in zone 5. All grow in USDA Hardiness zone 5.

There is no such thing as cheap when it comes to purebreds. i would recommend talking to your vet about local breeders. This is great because it the vet knows about them then they are taking care of their dogs. Good luck Shiba's are great little dogs.

My magnolia tree 2 to 3 years old has never flowered. How can I pollenate it so that it flowers?
I was told I need another tree to do this !!! cant believe that, any help much appreciated
My magnolia tree 2 to 3 years old has never flowered. How can I pollenate it so that it flowers?
Flowers are pollinated, you don't pollinate a tree. You don't need a second tree, The one you have want's food.
Sprinkle epsom salts around the drip line. and give it a drink of miracle gro. They bloom in the spring and early summer.
Reply:Be patient. Trees don't begin to flower until they have stored enough carbohydrates which comes with age. Right now the baby is still busy growing roots and leaves.........and probably more roots than leaves. When the roots are operating well and the leaves are providing enough solar collecting leaf surface for the tree to conduct all it's various other systems, then it will store enough carbohydrates to begin flowering. In the mean time, don't over stimulate it with excess nitrogen.
If the tree is in a lawn, it will be receiving plenty of fertilizer......and hopefully water.
Pollination occurs in the flowers in order to make seed. Think of it as a tree having sex to make a baby (the fruit and seeds).
Reply:You will need another magnolia near by to be successful - if no neighbours have one then you will have to plant another one. Good Luck
Reply:Ours just needed some fertilizer to encourage blooms.

Are the Magnolia Trees, dropping so many leaves allthe time?
I have two big magnolias in my front yard, but they loose lots of leaves avery day, what I can do ?
Are the Magnolia Trees, dropping so many leaves allthe time?
A magnolia is an evergreen or non-deciduous tree. All plants and I mean all plants drop leaves sometime. What is probably happening with your tree is that magnolias drop leaves in the spring early summer. The reason being is that as the tree grows the interior leaves on the tree or limb get shaded out. Once this happens it does not live (the leaf) because of the lack of light which is essentail, dies. Look out in your yard and you will see very tall trees with no lower limbs. Why? As the tree grows the lower limbs can not keep up. As less and less sunlight makes contact the limb eventually dies and drops off. What you are experiencing with your magmolia trees is normal. However, there will be seasons where the trees grow more or less due to enviromental factors(rain, temperature, etc.) which may lead to more leaf droppage or less.
Reply:Yes.. unfortunately they drop leaves all the tme.. THIS problem, however, is offset by the beauty of the tree
Reply:There are many reasons for dropping leaves. Have an arborist come by and look at them. Bartlett Tree Experts (a national company) will take soil samples and be able to determine if the leaves dropping is normal for this species or if it is under stress and how to save it. Sometimes it may need more water (did you have a drought last summer) or more fertilization down at the roots. Could have a pest problem too. There is no charge for the consultation at Bartlett.

How do I prune a magnolia tree?
Southern Magnolias are evergreen and can be pruned anytime. I would cut what is close to a building, crowding another tree or hanging downward. Always cut just above anpther green leaf or branch.
Chinese Magnolias lose their leaves in the winter and bloom in late winter or early Spring(Jan-Mar in SoCal). Do the same pruning. It is best to do it after it has bloomed. Don't wait until it is thinking about blooms(before Oct or Nov).
Good luck.

I have dappled sun in my backyard, what would grow in the shade of a fir tree best, lilac or saucer magnolia?
I'm in a sheltered yard in the US Pacific NW temperate, small 30 ft by 10 ft this would be in one back corner. Just took out the butterfly bush that is truly a weed. Need inspiration.
I have dappled sun in my backyard, what would grow in the shade of a fir tree best, lilac or saucer magnolia?
Rhododendrons and azaleas are made for spots like that and come in all kinds of different sizes and colors. This nursery in Oregon is a good source for both information %26amp; plants:

Non-natives like camelias and pieris would also work.
Reply:lilacs do good in the shade or sun and I think you would like them much better. The purple and the white are beautiful and they spread into a bigger bush so much quicker
Reply:Unfortunately, lilacs need full sun to grow best. I LOVE lilacs!!!! Used to grow them all the time at my old house.

Does anyone know how to frost the cupcakes like the magnolia bakery do ?
do u think they use a piping tips or spatula ?
Does anyone know how to frost the cupcakes like the magnolia bakery do ?
I didn't know what you meant by Magnoia Bakery, but I looked it up online to see if I could see what you meant about their cupcakes. I'm not a Sex and the City fan.
But in my search, I found this site, and if these photos are what you mean, it looks to me like they use a spatula. Or they could be using a large round piping tip. I tried that once and they turned out similar to the photos on this page.

The tip on my magnolia tree broke, will it still grow?
Just planted two weeks ago, it is about 3 ft. high and about five inches of the tip of the leader broke. It only has one other branch and it goes to the side, will the tree still grow correctly??
The tip on my magnolia tree broke, will it still grow?
Your tree will be able to grow more branches, even though the tip broke off as long as there are leaves on it during growing season.

Why does our magnolia tree not flower?
We live in Japan. In our garden we have a magnolia but it doesn't flower. I don't know what subspecies it is, but I'd like to know more. This tree is pretty common in Japan.
Any insights?
Why does our magnolia tree not flower?
It depends how established the tree is. Sometimes, a tree needs to be established before it flowers. Other species do the reverse: they cease regular flowering when established.
My father once told me a trick for making established trees flower, but he didn't mention if it was risky or not. Push a spade into the ground around the tree a few times, as a crude form of root pruning. It will cause the tree to "worry" about its loss of roots, and should cause it to try and reproduce, i.e. flower. I'm not sure if this is a tried and tested method, so use it at your own risk.
Also, maybe there is too much nitrogen in the soil. Excess nitrogen can inhibit flowering. Feeding with a potash and phosphate fertiliser can help.
Reply:Try feeding it with liquid fertiliser

If a Southern Magnolia in zone 8 has yellowing/dropping leaves, is it dying?
Magnolia is mature. Foliage very thin top 1/3 of tree. Yellowing/dropping leaves last year, but worse this year. Is setting some blooms, but not all over tree. Can this tree be saved? It is about 8 feet from foundation of our home.
If a Southern Magnolia in zone 8 has yellowing/dropping leaves, is it dying?
It sounds like it needs some food (worst case scenario, she broke a root).
and my book says they rarely do well for long next to a driveway. They are known for having surface roots, so maybe she wants a little more good soil around her feeder roots. Good stuff like compost or other healthy mulches (worm castings, manures, grass clippings, etc.).
Yellow leaves are usually low nitrogen or low iron or low zinc (or overwatering which is a cause of washing away the nutrients)
and we've been getting a lot of rain
magnolias are not a fan of waterlogged roots either, and the run off from your roof may be contributing to her soaking. They can't take a lot of drought but they don't like standing water at all.
Try feeding her micronutrients and a fertilizer with plenty of nitrogen in it. Nitrogen is not a long lasting fertilizer usually though, so mulches and worms is the best long term solution. Adding organic materials and organisms will help aerate your soil as well and so the water will run off in a more user friendly manner (magnolia friendly manner, that is).
a good (and fast acting) source of micronutrients is kelp/seaweed
'ironite' is ok for iron (or rusty water)
nitrogen comes in fish fertilizer ($3.50 walmart, made from fish, not for fish)
and then if you use mulches and worms, then maybe add rock fertilizers too (for long acting action). stuff like 'greensand', granite, rock potash and/or phosphorus rock (sometimes called raw rock phosphate, or soft) and there are others.
since some of the top growth might not recover then you might want to prune. if you do prune, then do so AFTER the intial blooms have come out, but before the other growth starts; usually this is shortly before July.
magnolias only, other trees get pruned at different times
prune according to the desires you find within yourself as well as the structures of the new buds you will find. The new buds are next year's flowers.

What is the best time of year to plant a magnolia tree in an English garden?
I live in Sussex on the South Coast of England and we get mild winters with little frost
What is the best time of year to plant a magnolia tree in an English garden?
You can plant Magnolia at any time of the year especially where you live. The most important thing for you is to check your soil. Make sure it is acid. If not then forget it. These plants are too expensive to take a chance with.
Hope this helps you.
Reply:Any time of year if it has been pot growen, otherwise plant between November and March
Reply:The best time would be now (Autumn). There are many types of Magnolia. If space is limited the white Magnolia Stellata is a good choice because it does not grow to big!
I have this one in my front garden and in the back garden one called Leonard Meissel which has pink flowers and it has grown far too big for the space!
Also, if you plant your magnolia and it grows too big, they do not move well even if you dig them up and move them in the autumn and replant and they do not flourish on being pruned.
Anyway, best of luck. They are very beautiful but just bear in the mind the size that some species grow to!
Reply:There is a good selection on here, you can certainly choose a smaller variety if your garden is not huge. It looks like the best time to plant is spring but from experience, if you plant one now it should be fine, as long as the roots aren`t disturbed. They don`t like to be messed about with once they are in place so make sure the spot you have chosen is the right place.
http://www.gardenersworld.com/plant-deta...
Reply:Lolly9's advice is pretty spot on. Some Magnolias seem to prefer soil that is on the acid side (you can check you pH with a little kit from a garden centre for a pound or so), but others like the Stellata can be grown reasonably happily on chalky soil.
Now is a good time to plant, as the soil is still warm and it is likely to get watered over the coming months. If you're garden is exposed to high winds then your Magnolia could be prone to scorch, but other than that they're not really that fussy. Watch out for grandiflora as the blooms can scorch if caught by frost and sun in the mornings.
I'd plant it in an area cleared of turf and when planting dig in plenty or compost and then mulch the surface with a few inches of well rotted compost or well rotted bark. They like humus rich soil and this is more important than the pH for most varieties.
If you are on chalk I'd stick to Stellata or try Liliiflora as these are little less fussy and are also more compact. The Soulangeanas are a lot bigger, but could be worth a try if you want a tree sized plant.
Anyway I hope that helps. With a little careful selection and planting you should have a plant that will bring you years of pleasure. I grow both Liliiflora, which flowers all year and the Stellata and I live in the South East too. Is there any better place to live!

It is a non alcoholic drink you can purchase before the show.
Does anyone know the receipe for Dolly Partons Dixie Stampede magnolia blossom drink they have on their menu?
I was not going to answer this as I have never been to Dixie Stampede. But seeing as no one else has responded, let me give it a try. I actually went to bartending school--after getting an M.A.--and I believe I can give you a recipe for the "magnolia blossom."
The original recipe with alcohol is:
4 oz gin
2 oz cream
1 oz lemon juice
1 drop grenadine syrup
Pour the gin, cream and lemon juice into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well, strain into a highball glass, and serve.
Instead of the gin, substitute ginger ale or plain soda water. This recipe makes just one drink, but you can amend it to your tastes.
If someone knows the exact recipe that Dixie Stampede uses, I'd be interested too!

I just noticed that my magnolia tree has little round holes all over the trunk, what is happening?
The holes start about 18 inches above the ground and go around in circles, evenly spaced up several feet. Does anyone know what is causing them and what I can do about them?
I just noticed that my magnolia tree has little round holes all over the trunk, what is happening?
Probably Woodpeckers or Sapsuckers. Not much you can do, unless you are willing to sit with a hose and wait. They feed mostly early morning.
Reply:If the holes are tiny, perfectly rounded and in alignment I'm quite sure they are caused by a "Yellow-bellied Sapsucker". Not much you can do about it but take heart, I honestly don't believe they will kill your tree.

There's not much you can do about them except put some kind of barrier around the trunk if there are enough to damage the tree.

Magnolia Stellata not flowered this year?
Last year my magnolia stellata flowered profusely but this year it has not produced a single bloom. Leaves are coming out okay and it looks healthy. Any reasons for it not flowering?
Magnolia Stellata not flowered this year?
Only two things can stop this magnolia from flowering.1/in august and september the roots were too dry,and so lacked the energy to produce flower buds, which make flowers for the following year.2/the soil has become to alkaline(limey) as it likes neutral to acid soil. The leaves will initially be green but then go jaundice in may, which is a sign of problem 2
Reply:There is nothing to treat. You may have chosen this as the best answer but it is the wrong answer. Stellata tolerate alkaline soil and the buds are not affected by anything but frost! Camellias are the ones affected by a dry summer not magnolias. Report It
Reply:They are just starting to flower now. Are you sure yours is not budding up? If you are UK we have had a cold spring which has delayed a lot of plants.
If there are no living buds it could have been hit by some of the late frosts. Stellata does flower late than the x soulangeana that is more common. (The large tulip shaped flowering magnolia.) A lot of those in my area were hit with the flowers open and they all turned brown on the trees.
Such a shame.
EDIT....Stellata is tolerant of alkaline soils and frost damages emerging buds...http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/plants/pl...
Reply:I found this article there are few clues there perhaps it will further your knowledge i guess you might know a thing or to about them if you have one.Seems to suggest they like the sun early in the day.

How long does it take for a magnolia tree to be fully grown?
I need this information for a story that I'm writing, so it doesn't have to be perfectly scientific. Just a round-about answer would be great! Thanks!!
How long does it take for a magnolia tree to be fully grown?
It's a hard question to answer, partly because there are about 80 different kinds of magnolias in the u.s. The Southern Magnolia - the one probably most people think of when they hear "magnolia" can keep growing for 80-120 years. So- a long time.

What is a good flowering annual that does well planted under a Magnolia tree?
I have about a four foot sguare garden plated under a Magnilia tree. Every year plants do well until about mid August and then they die off. I don't know if it is because the tree doesn't allow enough sun or what my problem is. I'm a pretty fair gardener and othrer areas in my yard do well. Thanks

impatiens
Reply:impatiens do well they are shade loving plants also plant caladium they also like shade as well as ferns check plant tags before buying so you can get mostly shade loving plants hostas all around the tree in a circle would look really good and even though they are perennial they will bloom in the summer
Reply:the tree wins in the war for water and nutrients, that's why... pot your plants and tuck them in amongst some mulch in that bed and they'll prob live longer.....of course, you'll need to feed and water them....
Reply:You could try Cyclamen. A corm and flower that does well in the shade and when flowering finishes your left with the nice leaves.
Reply:Pansy or violas - they grow well in sun or shade

My magnolia tree leaves are turning a light brown? Is this normal?
It just started changing. The leaves are not dried out just changing. Can anyone help?
My magnolia tree leaves are turning a light brown? Is this normal?
Do you know what kind of a magnolia tree it is? If not, even a good description will help. If it is a deciduous magnolia, its probably just fine even though it's very odd that it has waited until now to drop it's leaves (can happen in a very mild winter scenario though). However if it is an evergreen magnolia, it could have a case of ice or cold damage, especially if you had a warm spell recently followed by below freezing weather. Typically that is not too harmful to the tree and it can usually recover from that. But, if that is not the problem, it is likely something systemic (developing at the root level) that could be a big problem. A picture can help identify the first problem, but it would take a pretty in depth description of the tree and surroundings to figure a different issue. Hopefully yours is a deciduous variety and problem is solved!
Reply:it might be weather related i.e. cold or frost damage.

Ive a problem with my magnolia and maple tree its got spots spreading from soil up what is this is it disease?
spots very in size its almost like mold but a slight white almost grey but is not a mushroom fungus looking material. any size from size of a match head to size of a penny can i get rid of this or is the tree going to die ? the tree is new planted last year end of summer and it didnt have this then . leaves havent even sprouted yet its struggleing compared to other trees around .both trees are at different houses and have nothing to do with the other .
Ive a problem with my magnolia and maple tree its got spots spreading from soil up what is this is it disease?
It sounds like lichens. Lichens are a symbiotic algae/fungal growth that occurs on the bark of trees. They are completely harmless to trees. In fact, the presence of lichens is a good indicator of air quality. Below are a couple of links. The first is an article by Jim Shuster of the University of Illinois Extension Service on lichens. The second link is a photo I took of a flower bed in spring, but it includes the trunk of a Serviceberry tree (on the right) that has lichens. Does this look anything like your spots?

P.S. Newly planted trees do struggle because of the damage done to their root system during transplanting. They don't grow much above ground the first couple of years after they are planted. Instead, they focus their energy into new root development. You should expect that a newly transplanted tree will show little above ground growth for 1 yr. for every inch of diameter of their trunk size.
Reply:This could be as simple as extra water getting on the leaves (extra wet season)and causing powdery mildew (simple to spray for) or very serious. Take a sample to a nursery in your area, as it is occurring at two different locations it may be a common problem in your area this year and they may know how to treat it or it may not need treatment this year.
You really need to show it to someone who can give you the correct advice as it may spread eventually to the nearby trees. Good luck it may look bad but just be a harmless fungus and you will have nothing to worry about.
Do not spread lime about, it changes the PH of the soil and could be detrimental or even kill the trees if it changes the soil dramatically to the wrong PH for the trees involved.
Reply:Havent got a clue about what your asking...
LOVE the avatar photo though.
Why did you change the picture on me?
Reply:Go to your garden center and buy a 5 lb bag of dolmatic lime and for a tree over 10 yrs old use about the whole bag of lime spreading it under the branch line and not just around the trunk.
Those spots are mineral deposits and the lime will neturalize the soil and it may take a entire season but next yr no spots and plus the lawn likes lime too.
Reply:Got a good nursery near by? Scoop up some of the earth with the "stuff" on it and take down there. Show it to own of the arbourists(tree hugger) and they should be able to help you solve your problem and provide you with a solution. Good luck!

What are the maximum growing conditions for a young magnolia tree?
Mine is not doing well. No flowers at all this year, it's second year.
I need advise on soil, placement for sun and moisture of soil.
What are the maximum growing conditions for a young magnolia tree?
Magnolias like full sun but are finicky when it comes to watering. It is easy to over-water. In addition to the expected results of over-watering, it will seriously wash away the nutrients that magnolias need to grow to full potential. I live in SC and my Magnolia has been in the ground (transplanted from a sapling with just two leaves) for about five years. I've not had a bloom yet, bu that's not abnormal. I've had very, very healthy growth and the tree has gained about four feet in horizontal growth.
By the time your tree reaches 2nd year growth, it should be able to sustain it's on growth, although it wouldn't hurt to perhaps give it a regular dose of miracle growth or some other well-rounded fertilizer. By all means do not over water the plant, as this will wash precious nutrients down below the root line and actually be detrimental to plant growth.
Good luck
Reply:Magnolias use about the same amount of water as any other tree of the same size. Daily watering of any established tree is detrimental to the roots. Infrequent, but deep, irrigation is best. This means to water thouroughly until it has soaked down at least two feet if possible. Even in warm climates, you should not have to rewater for at least a week. Magnolias, as most landscape trees, do best in full sun. Do not fertilize the tree, especially with nitrogen. This element promotes vegetative growth (leaves) but delays flowering. The soil usually provides ample fertilizer. A two-year old tree would not be expected to flower each year. Give it a little more time, and good care, and the flowers will return.
Reply:Magnolias take an incredible amount of water. They ahve such succulent leaves and huge, moist flowers, water is the top priority. Full sun is fine. But if you are ina dry area, it may not work w/o daily watering from a sokaer or drip hose.
In places wehre the soil is moist (lower South), Magnolias will often gobble up all the water in the area, causing grass and shrubs to fail, and still may not get enough water if they are looking pekid. They kinda have to be "lone rangers" to do well.
I'm pretty sure your problem is purely lackof water. They are otherwise a pretty hearty tree.

We have bought a house with an old neglected magnolia tree. Can the mis-shapen branches be safely pruned?
The house garden is located in South Melbourne. The tree is about 4 metres high but has had many large branches removed while the house was being renovated about 6 months ago. Other branches are impacting on each other and becoming mis-shapen and deseased. The tree has some new shoots and we want to retore it to good health. Can the mis-shapen branches, up to 5 cms in diameter, be pruned so that the tree can be properly shaped? Is this the correct time of year to undertake this work?
We have bought a house with an old neglected magnolia tree. Can the mis-shapen branches be safely pruned?
Do the pruning next spring, just before it starts to leaf out again. Remove any dead wood or branches that are damaged. If you can, do not remove more then 1/4 of the good branches in any season. Take out the worst and then trim out more next season.
Reply:I have a large Magnolia tree that has to be pruned every couple of years or it grows over into my neighbors yard as well as over my own garage roof. Hire someone that is trained to trim. They'll know about shaping so your tree will look great. I do this just after it is done blooming.
Reply:I know that Crepe Magnolias are proficient in the South. They trim them WAY back in the Fall, which for us is October.
Hope this helps!
Reply:I'm writing from North Dakota on the other side of the world, in more ways than you can imagine. I'm curious as to why you are seeing new growth, shouldn't it be going dormant? Were the roots affected during the renovation, if they were, now would be a good time to sort things out. If not, pruning should be done when dormant. That said, it sounds like the tree has already been through hell and a little more pruning shoudn't hurt.

Can I move a small magnolia tree even though it is July?
Wanted to move a small magnolia tree now, before it gets to big and it crowds the other plants. What are the chances of it survivng? Thanks
Can I move a small magnolia tree even though it is July?
The chances of survival are not good. Why don't you wait until fall, when the magnolia is no longer in an active growth phase? It is not going to grow that much more in the next 3 or 4 months, and you have a much better chance of success. If you dig it up now, it will be a serious shock to the tree, and the hot summer weather will make it that much more difficult for the tree to recover. If you can wait until fall, the tree will be at least semi-dormant, the weather will put less stress on the tree's recovery, and the roots of the tree will spend the winter months reestablishing themselves in the new location.
Reply:Chanses of surviving a transplant this time of year is less than 15%.
Reply:Depending on the size now, if you got all the root system you could do it as long as you get it in a good spot with cool shade for it but it would be best to wait till fall if at all possible as it will be lots less stressful and have a much better chance at survival. Whatever you decide, make sure it is getting lots of good water and do not let it dry out too much when you do move it.

How do you care for a southern magnolia to keep the leaves from turning yellow?
Is it getting too much water? I thought they liked a lot of moisture??? Or perhaps that is normal??? Any help would be appreciated!!! Thanks!
How do you care for a southern magnolia to keep the leaves from turning yellow?
Give the magnolia a couple of handfulls of lime. Then add several handfuls of Ironite, along with a little 10-10-10
Reply:Is it the older leaves. The trees shed off their older leaves this time of year. You can put some epsom salt water around the tree if you really concerned If it is not raining an inch a week the tree should be watered. If it is limbed up mulch out to the drip line but make sure the mulch does not come in contact with the trunk. Mags have quite a number of feeder roots near the surface and can dry out so the mulch will retain moisture and look nice as nothing really grows under a large mag. good luck from

Reply:Well I don't know if it is getting too much water! Did you check how wet the ground is? Magnolia's love acid fertilizer and also they love coffee grounds! Do you live in a cold climate? If you do and you are just in the Spring season, it is probably normal! I live in the Northeast and my leaves are yellow. My garden center told me to mix 4 Tablespoons of Mir-acid in 2 gal. of water. Feed your Magnolia this once a week for 3 weeks and see if it doesn't make a difference. It definitely helped mine. I just planted 2 of them last year. Actually, mine aren't southern magnolia's but it should work the same and help green up those leaves!
Reply:Moderate amounts of water. If the leaves are turning yellow, that's usually indicative of lack of nitrogen and higher than preffered acidic conditions. Check the PH balance of your soil and find a reference guide or someone at a local nursery to advise.

Where can i find a paramedic to RN bridge course closest to where i live? Magnolia Texas?
i live in Magnolia texas close to Houston Tx I want to find a Paramedic to Registered Nurse bridge course around my area that i can go to but im having problems finding them.
Where can i find a paramedic to RN bridge course closest to where i live? Magnolia Texas?
They are not very many of those bridge classes AT ALL!!
The only ones that I know of are online.
They provide you the study material, you do everything yourself and then at the end you go take a class final. You pass the class final you can then go take the N-CLEX (natioanl nursing test). It's something that will take A LOT of self-disipline and self teaching. It doesn't alloy you much of any hands on experience either.
Don't know the name of any online schools that offer it but I'm thinking there is one that is based in NY?
Reply:I dont know of any traditional schools that do that. As stated, they are available online. The major one (and the one I would recommend) is Excelsior College. www.excelsior.edu I am enrolled there now, and am very satisified. Hope this helps.

Reply:I dont know of any traditional schools that do that. As stated, they are available online. The major one (and the one I would recommend) is Excelsior College. www.excelsior.edu I am enrolled there now, and am very satisified. Hope this helps.
How do I order cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery?
I need about 40 cupcakes for my birthday on 10/2. I cant get them all at once at the bakery because they only allow you to take 12 at a time.
How do I order cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery?
try sugar sweet sunshine. yummy cupcakes, and they'll deliver
call ahead and tell them how many you need and they're reasonably priced
although making them yourself would be cheaper

Where can I buy Nestle or Magnolia all purpose cream in San Diego/El Cajon California?
There is Seafood City in San Diego and I was hoping I could find it there, knowing that it's a Filipino grocery store. I went there thousands of times (I don't know if there's something wrong with my eyes) but I never found one.
Where can I buy Nestle or Magnolia all purpose cream in San Diego/El Cajon California?
I'd have to look at Magnolia's website to see what they have, but when I lived in Mexico in 1994 I found Nestle's Media Crema which I believe is the same product.
I buy it now at Walmart in with the Mexican food items. Look for it there. UPC code is 0-28000 51720-5
You can call them at (800)258-6727
I went to their website and cannot find this product, but I buy it regularly at Walmart and below Media Crema it states Table Cream. They also have La Lechera condensed milk that competes with the Magnolia brand.
Magnolia and Eagle Brand was bought by Smucker's.
I don't know why you're looking for these products at Seafood City instead of one of the numerous major grocery store chains in the area.
Reply:have you tried some of the ethnic markets in the area. I used to live in PB but I know ther have to be some markets that carry that stuff
Reply:another place that you can check is Food 4 Less, Foodland, and Northgate all three of this stores carry both and the last two are in National City btw.

I think my husband over fertilized it. I transplanted it 2 years ago and it was doing great but now the leaves are turning brown and it looks wilted all the time. Don't want to lose it. Help!!
How can I save my dying magnolia tree?
most trees don't need a whole lot of fertilizer.
magnolias require a lot of water. you might try a deep soaking.

When is the best time of year to transplant a Magnolia tree?
We live in SC (the Charleston area)The tree is about ten feet tall now and it's being moved to a different location in the same area.
When is the best time of year to transplant a Magnolia tree?
Fall is always the best time to transplant trees, bushes, and shrubs. You want the weather to be mild so that the plant wont have to work as hard and can concentrate on getting its new root system established. Make sure you put compost in your hole before you place the tree in and water well. By next summer your magnolia should be good and ready to make beautiful blooms.
Reply:yes winter time for any tree, as they stop growing during the winter
Reply:Any time after september will work.Thats the time of year to plant or prune trees.

When should you prune a magnolia tree?
it's about 20 feet tall, and getting too big for the garden. we're in north london.
When should you prune a magnolia tree?
This should be done when the tree is in full leaf, usually during midsummer. Pruning cuts made at this time of the year will have plenty of time to begin healing before the onset of winter, and are less prone to dieback.
Reply:have never seen one pruned. you do need to wait until dormice time.

Can you start a magnolia tree from those things that fall off the tree?
If you're talking about the red berries in the pods that fall from the magnolia tree, yes. They will take a long time to bloom and most likely not come true from the parent. Best bet regarding propagation is to take a 6 inch cutting right below a leaf node and keep in shade with moist soil. They root very easily and will be exactly like the parent plant. Good luck!

What is the proper way to start a saucer magnolia tree seed?
I am starting with seeds and need to know how to take care of them.
What is the proper way to start a saucer magnolia tree seed?
you may need to scarify them before planting and you may not get a very good germination rate. When germinated, give them bright light, warm temperatures and ample water

What is the best way to plant a magnolia tree?
I live in NH and do not know anything about the tree other than i love it suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
What is the best way to plant a magnolia tree?
A magnolia will struggle with New Hampshire's winter. I live in Georgia and my Magnolias are getting ready to come into bloom already. Magnolias need plenty of sun, and as much water as they can get. They don't like to have their feet wet though so they need to be in fertile, well-drained soil that has regular moisture. Here in the South we plant them in low areas to meet their water needs, not swampy, just low. It's also worth noting that few things are tougher or more persistent than fallen Magnolia leaves and they will fall year-round as they are replaced. Cones will also fall once a year in the early fall.
Finally, the shade produced by Magnolias is so deep because of the dense foliage that nothing will grow under them, not even grass. They also produce some natural inhibitors that reduce the growth of competitive plants inside their canopy span. That is why the lower limbs on Magnolias are not removed. They hide the bare ground underneath.
The worst that can happen is that the cold and short growing season will either stunt it or kill it. Give it a shot and see what happens.
Reply:With the roots in the ground and the leaves sticking out
Reply:Since you love the tree, you're gonna hate me!! LOL
I live in the south where they are very common, we had a big one in our back yard, and yes....WE CUT IT DOWN. I hated that tree. The blooms (when it did bloom for a short period) were pretty, but it was so horrible to keep kept up. The leaved were always falling. Summer, fall, winter, always falling!!!
Good luck on planting on in NH, because Magnolias love warm weather, that's why they're so popular in the south.

Why have all the leaves fallen off our brand new sweet bay magnolia trees?
We just purchased 2 eight ft. tall Sweetbay magnolias. They were planted on the south west corner of our house according to a landscaping plan we had drawn up. Within three weeks now, most of the leaves have fallen off. The trees look so sad. Is this normal for transplanted magnolias? They were being kept in a hot house when we bought them. It's spring here in kansas, so not too warm or too cold as of yet.
Why have all the leaves fallen off our brand new sweet bay magnolia trees?
The change from hot house to the outside may have been a big shock from them, or they may have dried out temporarily.
With care you will probably find that the leaves grow back. As mentioned do not fertilize. Buy some seaweed extract (Seasol or another brand), fantastic tonic, that prevents transplant shock and encourages root growth. Every time you plant new plants water in with this.
Don't overwater but make sure plants do not dry out and water deeply as they are large plants.
Plants can loose their leaves as a survival means, you will probably find with attention the leaves will return.
Reply:return them if there's a guarantee with them.... no reason you should spend good money on a plant and then have to spend more time and energy and money to 'nurse it back to health'....
if you did everything right when you planted them, then the nursery needs to compensate you.....
Reply:Call the people who sold these trees to you and find out what is happening and if this is normal.
They might be in shock. Only time will tell. Do not fertilize. Keep up with your watering.

How do you kill a magnolia tree?
This tree is almost half dead now, and I wanted to hasten the deadening so that the Property Owners Association will cut it down sooner.
How do you kill a magnolia tree?
Don't sprinkle salt around it! That will kill everything... ask Genghis Khan. Use a razor blade, and cut a complete circle around the circumference of the trunk. The live tissue of any woody plant is beneath the bark. If that is interrupted, the flow of water and nutrients will stop. You've got to get through the protective bark, and deep enough to sever the vascular tissue.
Now... if the association figures you killed it... then they might figure you have to pay to have it down... or the replacement tree?
Becareful here, you may be representing yourself fraudulently. To make the cut 'less noticeable' try to only make one cut, and make it low on the trunk, below where people 'comfortably' would look. Near the ground.
Good luck,
I hope that this helps
Reply:If you're sure it cannot be saved, try sprinkling salt around the roots.

Reply:I would try to save it...Magnolias are beautiful in the summer... However, I could see your point with the big ole waxy leaves.

How do you grow a magnolia tree from seed?
i dont know how to start one from seed and take root. my mother and i have tried various ways, burning the seed, etc. can you please help. only serious answers please. thank you.
How do you grow a magnolia tree from seed?
Allow the magnolia cone to ripen on the tree. Remove the cone from the tree and let the cone dry. The fleshy fruits will fall freely from the cone when properly dried. Soak the seeds in liquid detergent and warm water for 1-2 days to remove the waterproof coating. Remove from the detergent water and remove any remaining flesh from the seeds. Dry the seeds with a paper towel. Place the seeds in a zip lock bag with moistened peat, vermiculite or sand and refrigerate for at least two months. Now your seeds are ready to be planted. Remember that seeds should not be planted deeper than two times their diameter.

Can you start a magnolia tree from a cutting?
I cut a small limb from a tree and now have it in water, can I root it and plant it?
Can you start a magnolia tree from a cutting?
Yes, Magnolia's can be propagated from soft and greenwood cuttings. Softwood cuttings are taken from the tips of new shoots. These shoots must be turgid (flush with water) at the time that they are cut, that is why they usually are collected in the morning. They wilt %26amp; dry out quikly, so they need to be prepared quickly and planted right away. Use a well drained and watered planting medium like one part peat mixed with one part coarse sand. The cuttings should be taken at the junction of the new shoot and last years wood. Remove the tips so the cuttings are no more than 4" long. Plant and place cuttings into a plastic film tent or enclosed misting container. Keep the cuttings misted. Apply bottom heat at 68-75 degrees F. Rooting should occur within 6-10 weeks.
Reply:"A Well Lit Garden" has an excellent and correct answer. One bit of advice - once the cutting is in the planting medium, do not disturb it by checking to see it it is rooted, as you will tear off the tiny and fragile roots resulting in "instant failure".

What is wrong with my magnolia tree?
It looks dead, but it has new little sprigs at the bottom of the trunk. I live in the Southern part of the Midwest and I see many magnolias blooming very well and looking very healthy within my town. What can I do to encourage its growth?
What is wrong with my magnolia tree?
No Magnolia tree is too old. I have two beautiful Magnolias in my front yard which are 60 years old. The problem could be that a disease from a surrounding oak has infected your tree. One of our two trees developed a disease a year ago. We completely pruned back the tree discarding all of the diseased limbs. We then used pesticide and watered every day. The trees are once again beautiful.
Reply:I've experienced some trees, newly planted or within a couple years, that the main body of the one you planted dies, while it still brings forth life near the bottom as your magnolia. I would just leave it alone and let it do it's own thing. If this happens to be a big magnolia, and there are no leaves one it, time to break out the chainsaw.

Does anyone own a janome magnolia sewing machine?
I am a beginner who wants to learn the basic of clothing construction and some mending...my choices so far are the viking emerald 116, the janome magnolia and the kenmore 16221? Any suggestions out there...
Does anyone own a janome magnolia sewing machine?
I'm a Viking person myself, but Janomes are good machines, with lots of features per dollar. Some of the Kenmores are Janomes in disguise.
Have you test sewn on any of these machines? That's the first big thing to try. Bring some truly miserable to sew fabrics like cheap cotton jersey and silky polyester as well as some nice wool, cotton twill or denim, and anything else you'd like to try. Walmart often has suitably difficult fabrics over on the $1 table, and the ladies in the fabric department often sew, so can help you pull out some good test fabrics.
I'd also send you to the sewing machine review section of patternreview: http://sewing.patternreview.com/SewingMa... You may need to sign up for the free membership to read older reviews -- I have had no problems with my membership in the several years I've been a member.
I really urge you to go shopping in a real sewing machine shop, and compare a number of different models, including those that are a few hundred up from where you are now. I'm NOT saying these are bad machines, but you need to know what good stitching looks like and how easy a machine can make things for you. You also need to try some of the adjustments that are not necessarily found on cheaper machines, like presser foot pressure. I'm not trying to upsell you, I just don't want to see you frustrated, and since I don't know these machines and sewed for many years on one that frustrated the daylights out of me, I'd like to see you skip that step. %26lt;g%26gt;
The other reasons I'd like to see you try machines in a sewing machine store (typically a sew 'n' vac) are that you should get a decent demonstration of the abilities of each machine, you may learn some tricks while they're being demonstrated (the slickest
waistband elastic application I've ever learned came from a lady demonstrating a machine), and they might just have a much better machine that they've taken in on trade, and would be in your price range. Oh, and sewing machine stores typically offer classes, including basic how to use your machine classes for free, and pay for it classes for special projects.
What you absolutely *need* to sew garments is a good straight stitch, a decent zigzag and a buttonhole method that doesn't drive you bonkers. The other fancy stitches that many machines are crowded with are not needed for basic sewing, and rarely used by most folks, in my experience.
Two other suggestions:
http://www.cet.com/~pennys/faq/smfaq.htm
and Carol Ahles' book Fine Machine Sewing, which you can probably find at the public library. Pay special attention to the first chapters on thread, needles, cleaning your machine, and on the last sections on choosing a machine. Pick it up again later when you need to do a machine blindhem. %26lt;g%26gt; Carol's a good teacher, and her work is impeccable, and the techniques are not all that difficult. (Yes, I know her; I sometimes help out in her booth at sewing shows; no, I don't have any interest in her company.)
Reply:Thank you so much...i did check out pattern review and bought a janome after seeing a demonstration..I just made my first fleece jacket for my husband...its a little off but he wore it out. Report It

Little gem magnolia- I am removing a dead plum in a poor drainage area, will a magnolia have tha same problem?
the area sometimes has standing water in the plum bowl. i know plums are sensitive. maybe a magnolia will do better if i raise the grade slightly in the same place.

Yes, some trees do better, especially flowering ones but I am surprized about the fruit tree they usually need lots of water as well. Check the water content. Take it to your local water company, they will test it. I also recommend the mimosa, it is absolutely beautiful, we have 2. They have small trunks, go up and come out like a big umbrella it has small leaves on a long stem and pink whispy flowers. Very lovely.
Reply:magnolias i think dont like to be sogged out either.
but from what ive seen weeping willows grow real big and thrive in these boggy areas, their roots just suck all that water up and then beg for more
