Hi:
Cutting a branch off a Magnolia tree won't work to plant some where else. The root system of a Magnolia is wide and once the Magnolia is established, you can damage the tree by pruning it. Magnolias are a plant specimen that only should be pruned when they are younger and done in the summer, after bloom time.
Seeds are very slow to germinate and you can take a young Magnolia can be propaged in summer after the bud forms. You can propagate by taking three to four inch green cuttings. The shoots should be put in a sand base light weight soil and you should mist oftern.
You can also do graphing on an establish strong Magnolia. I am a landscaper and design and I usually don't recommend doing anything to your established Magnolia unless you have the right environment to propagate or graph.
I hope this has helped some. The Magnolia is one of my favorite trees here in the south. If you have a healthy one, enjoy and don't prune it if it is well established.
I will link you to the site map of my website. This page has everything that is on my website. Browse through as there are many tips, techniques and articles that may give you some information. Good luck to you and have a great day!

A evergreen magnolia that grows in st. louis?
Can anyone tell me if they have an evergreen magnolia that grows well in St. Louis? Im looking for a broadleaf evergreen tree that will work well as a small-medium sized specemin plant. I would love a magnolia, but am open to other options.

Magnolia walls or white walls?
The ceiling and skirting will be white.
Magnolia walls or white walls?
Magnolia.
You will find a white ceiling may now look as white as it should be when you paint the ways white so the cailing will need another.
A white ceiling that can look great against a magnolia wall but not as good against white walls.
Reply:Magnolia.....
Reply:all one colour may be too much in a large room you may be better off with a pale blue green or maybe lemon
Reply:Magnolia, it'll soften the look slightly. All white can be a little harsh.
Reply:Magnolia, white is so sterile! it would be like being in hospital!!!
Reply:For what room?
I like white bedrooms, but magnolia living areas
Reply:Magnolia, white would be too much.
Reply:i would go for magnolia
Reply:Here is my suggestion; Magnolia or maybe Navajo white looks great on walls in a satin finish with semi gloss white trim, baseboards and doors. Paint the ceiling with a plain white ceiling paint.
Reply:There are so many shades of emulsion that resemble magnolia, that it can get confusing. We chose Antique Lace, which is warmer than magnolia, but looks great with white ceilings, skirting's and doors.
White Walls and ceilings can look clinical, but produce bright reflected light, which is great for pictures and ornaments.
There used to be ranges of paint called 'a whiter shade', which were very pale choices of different pastel colours, and these look nice. The main thing to avoid is to start painting different colours on different walls in the same room. It will make things look confusing and smaller!
Reply:white.do everything white makes the room nice and bright
Reply:Magnolia. The contrast would be subtle and beautiful. Nice choice.
Reply:if its all white wont it look too clinical id opt for good old magnolia and you cant go wrong

When and how do I take Magnolia cuttings?
Have tried several differnet methods, but nothing seems to happen
When and how do I take Magnolia cuttings?
have you tried airlayering .august cut a shoot half way through and sprinkle with rooting powder.
push moist spagnum moss into slit .
wrap with clear plastic bag eg polythene bag tie around wound and wait . in afew weeks you will see roots .if nothing happens take off bags you cannot damage tree
the other way is to find a branch close to ground cut half way through near leaf joint and bury the branch into the ground this can be done late spring after flowering up until late summer
good luck
Reply:I haven't personally rooted Magnolia cuttings but I have been reading about it.

What is the difference between a tulip tree and a magnolia tree?
The lady at the garden center of Lowe's said a tulip tree is actually a variety of magnolia.
What is the difference between a tulip tree and a magnolia tree?
The Tulip tree belongs to Magnoliaceae family and is known as The King of the Magnolias..... The only difference between a magnolia and a tulip tree is a tulip is deciduous..meaning it loses its leaves in winter. and the color of its flowers, which are green and orange. A magnolia is evergreen...at least the one most people think of when they think magnolia...large, fragrant white blooms with a glossy, deep green leaf.

What/when do I feed a young saucer magnolia tree?
Spring. As soon as the buds start to swell. Apply the fertilizer about the same distance from the trunk as the branches spread. Work into the soil if possible and water slow and deep to avoid washing it away. A very young tree 1/2 pound ( maybe a cup ) every month until early summer. A general purpose fertilizer is fine. Something like 5-10-10 or even 10-20-10. Use less of the more concentrated. The higher Phoshoorous ( middle number ) promotes flowers. Avoid feeding in the fall. If you stimulate growth too late it is more easily damaged by frost.

Planting seeds of a magnolia how to?
I have some seeds from my magnolia I would like to grow
Planting seeds of a magnolia how to?
I'm a horticulturlist. Good answer below. When you see the seeds poking out of the seed head, pick the 'cone' and set it up off the ground. The seeds will fall out of it. Next, after you gather all of your seeds, put them in a metal strainer under running water. Grind the seeds around until you get off the red coat. Plant immediately!! Water lightly daily, then increase as the plants grow. You may choose to put them all in one large container, but I recommend putting a few seeds in smaller pots. Hope this helps!
Reply:The first thing you will have to do is soak them in water for a day or so, and then remove that red coating from it. The red coating inhibits growth, so you have to remove that before it will grow.
Now roll the seeds up in some paper towels, and wet the paper towels. The seeds should germinate in a few days, then plant them in small pots with some light potting soil.
Once germinated, keep them good and moist, and give them lots of light.
Good luck.

I planted a mature 6' tall butterfly magnolia last fall in my back yard where it's exposed to the full sun.
The soil is hard solid clay so it doesn't drain very well. Until now the tree doesn't produce any flower. The leaves doesn't look healthy and it doesn't grow well. What should I do to to help the tree grows better and flowers next year?
Thanks in advance for your tips.
I planted a mature 6' tall butterfly magnolia last fall in my back yard where it's exposed to the full sun.
well it sounds like you didn't give the tree its best choices for growing areas, but in any case you should be able to keep it growing by improving the soil a bit next spring and by feeding it a good quality neutral fertilizer like 8-8-8--as far as flowering goes though you should actually see flowers even if its not doing so well as flowers usually show even heavier on stressed plant as it is natures way of reproducing, and once a plant begins to stress out it tends to try and reproduce---thats why when a plant is being grown for a flower show that the grower will artificially stress it out with either girdling or some other method----try using superphosphate this fall which will normally slow the upper growth of the tree to initiate more root growth--that tends to send that same signal to the plant---------------good luck --blanco
Reply:this fall if the tree last that long .replant it in some good soil that you can buy at any garden store .but for now it just to hot and to dry to mess with .keep it water.
Reply:When you say mature, how old do you mean? Some varieties take longer to flower than others. Also, was it maybe planted too deep? I know with some trees and most plants, planting them too deeply can delay or prevent flowering altogether.
Reply:Keep it watered and maybe get some better soil or some rocks to increase drainage. If the water doesn't drain or evaporate then the roots can rot. Good luck!!!

What kind of environment does the magnolia prefer ?
flowers
What kind of environment does the magnolia prefer ?
Moderate to low tolerance to cold weather; do not resist frost or snow. Though a tropical tree full sun exposure is not advisable, thus should be planted in absolute umbrian areas. They prefer fresh, deep and humid soil none limy. Should the ground have mineral deficiencies it could suffer different types of chlorosis.
Hope it helps.
Reply:There are all types of magnolias the deciduous types prefer a cold temperate climate with adequate water and the evergreen varieties can tolerate warmer climates with adequate water. Check out the varieties and see that they fit with the climate zones you live in. Its rubbish that they don't wear frost.
Reply:Lots of assorted flowers are a great blend
Reply:well what kind,southern?star?sauser?sucen?
Reply:They mostly like warm and humid weather, like in the Southeast. I've seen them in Zone 5 areas, but I think they're iffy there. Zones 6 - 9 are where they do the best.

When is the best time to prune a well established magnolia?

When is the best time to prune a well established magnolia?
It's really best not to cut a magnolia at all.
If you have to because it is blocking access or light then you should prune in the height of summer so the tree has time to repair the cuts before winter sets in.
Reply:Immediately after flowering. If you do it too late in the year you will cutting off the following seasons flower buds.
Reply:Ideally magnolia trees should not be pruned.
Reply:why would you want to?.... like duffer stated, it's best to NOT prune a magnolia.... they are very slow to heal and those open wounds then, are an invite to pests and diseases....
if it's too big, that's a darned shame..consult with a TRAINED arborist (not a tree-trimmer!!!) for help in dealing with THAT.................... if you want to 'limb it up' so you can walk under the lower branches, dont!... the low branches should be left to drag the ground so that you don't have to rake daily, those danged falling leaves and buds and flowerstuffs.....
established, huh?... are you saying it was just 'let go' to do it's own thing and now you want to 'adjust'it somehow?... tough to do without harm to the tree....if it's a basic, oldie type magnolia, southern or not....
now, if it's a spring flowering saucer magnolia, like this one,

Why didn't my magnolia tree produce flowers this year?
Additional info:
A branch from a neighboring tree fell on it last summer %26amp; broke a branch off. I have noticed a bunch of new limbs sprouting from the break.
Also, we did have a unusually cold spring, but I don't think we got any frost when the flowers should have been blooming.
Why didn't my magnolia tree produce flowers this year?
Here in NE Ohio, we had a major freeze the first week in April. A lot of Magnolias were just about to bloom and the flowers were killed. We had temps of 80 degrees one day followed by three nights of lower 20's. Our neighbor's Magnolia didn't have any flowers on it, either. Our Redbud and Dogwood didn't have any flowers, either, so we expect you experienced the same as the low temps were widespread. Barring another spring like last year, the trees should bloom again next year.

Reply:By any chance, did you fertilize the grass under/around it? High-nitrogen fertilizer such as that used for lawns can inhibit flowering in many plants. If that isn't the case, then I suggest contacting a tree surgeon to have a look at the tree if it is a large and valuable plant, to see what might be the problem. Also, contact nurseries in the area; if there WAS frost in your area at a critical time, I suspect they will be aware of it and know that MANY magnolias didn't bloom.
Good luck!
Reply:While not knowing your area of the country, many Magnolias
bloom twice a year. The one in the spring is the most spectacular, however, they tend to bloom again in August or Sept. If the tree you have does not show buds now it will not bloom. If it shows buds allow the showing of it and photograph the buds and damage to the tree.
The regular fert would have helped versus hurt the tree in it's recovery. By the time the fert worked it's way to the roots the tree should have already flowered (sorry responder). The tree is probably in shock and can respond given what it does in late summer or fall.
Should the tree not bloom at all this summer or fall contact your neighbor for a homeowners claim of damages. At best you can be friendly and expect a minimum payment of less than $200. On contact with the insurance demand complete removal of your existing tree, roots included, plus the replacement.
Let the tree be. If it blooms the second bloom get a basic
10-20-10 with minerals fert spikes. You will need to place these outside the dripline of the tree at the manuf. specs for distance. If you notice any other die-back on the tree, increased insect activity, or any fungi, contact your neighbor immediately. Insurance is what this is about - Insure both yourself and your property.
Reply:Did you spend time talking with it each day? They are very sensitive plants you know.
Reply:Too much rain or not enough sun effects how many blooms come out. I have about 10 and they did not bloom well this year, either.

Dimensions of Japanese magnolia?
How far should it be from house to avoid damage to foundation and roof?
Dimensions of Japanese magnolia?
Audubon Japanese Magnolia 10 x 10
Japanese Magnolia sieboldii 15 h x 12s
As you can see it depends on the actual variety. If the tree has a ten foot spread you should place it 5 feet or more from the house. If the spread is 20 ft, it should be 10ft or more from the house. As a horticulturalist and designer I often have had to talk people into keeping tree's a healthy distance from the house. It's a shame how many times you see a 20 ft tree 3 ft from the house.

When is the best time of the year to dig up a magnolia tree in the wile and take home to my yard?
Dig a small one in early spring, just before it starts sending up its new growth. The smaller the tree, the easier it will be to dig it without causing serious transplant shock.
Add a root stimulator to the first watering. Hold off on any fertilizer until the next year, when it has an established root system. (You don't want to encourage a lot of new top growth, when it doesn't have the roots to support it)
When is the best time of the year to dig up a magnolia tree in the wile and take home to my yard?
Dig either in early spring or late fall while it's dormant, but, are you sure you really want a magnolia in your yard?
We had one planted some 20 years ago, on a beautiful lawn, not realizing nor did the nursery tell us that these trees have a habit of destroying the surrounding grass, and many other plants wil not grow in the vicinity of the magnolia.
I guess it's got something to do with the acid or chemicals the tree gives off, and they leave a mess when blooming.
Reply:Before the sap rises. You may have a large area to dig.
Some root systems are as wide as the limbs extend.
Reply:fall
Reply:Early spring before it blooms or leafs-out. It will be less shocking to the plant . Be sure that you dig around the plant far enough to get all of its roots or it will not survive. Also, be sure to water it at least once a week.
Reply:Small in fall
Reply:First of all, it is illegal to dig plants from land you do not own. So if the "wild" is public land, park land or some one else's land, you need permission of the land owner to dig.
Second, wild plants do not transplant nearly as well as nursery grown container plants or nursery dug balled and burlaped plants. A wild tree should be a sapling, no more than four feet tall and truck no more than 1 inch in diameter if you want it to survive. Magnolias are very slow recoverng from being dug and transplanted, a nursery grown container plant will grow much faster.
Dig in the early spring before the leaves come out. You will need to get a root ball at least half as wide as the tree is tall.
Reply:april would be the best time of year but be gentle when transporting.

Give it time, it will. Magnolia trees, at least mine did, took about 10 years to bloom. I have several white magnolia trees here in central Georgia. You can tell if they are going to bloom because they get something that looks like a candelabra light bulb at the ends of the branches.
I love my magnolia trees. Just before the flower opens, I bring one into the house and watch it open. It's fantastic to watch!

Are magnolia trees easy to maintain?
is there a lot of pruning to do? do they grow to be pretty big?
Are magnolia trees easy to maintain?
I have a magnolia tree in my yard in Florida is at least 40 feet high..They require no maintence whatever if you prefer, they are hearty...I have trimmed maybe not over 12 or 15 lower branches off of them in a total of 6 years... I like to water mine and throw a little fertilizer now and then..but they will survive without it..Maybe if you buy one to transplant in your yard..you migth want to "baby" it the first full season..

Can I grow a Quince tree together intertwined with a Magnolia and expect them both to thrive?
I wouldn't, as your objective is to get them both to 'thrive'.
They are both deciduous and need to make best use of the available light during summer. Lower light levels will potentially cause them to become weaker and probably flower less, which would be a pity as they are both beautiful trees/shrubs.
You don't mention which magnolia variety you're thinking of - some of them can grow very tall and would dwarf the Quince.
If you want them to complement each other, try planting them nearby, avoiding the taller Magnolia shading the Quince too much. You could consider some evergreen plant(s) which would add winter interest too. Remember, these plants can live for decades and their root systems will expand, alongside their above ground growth -greater competition for nutrients and water too.
Good luck! Rob
Can I grow a Quince tree together intertwined with a Magnolia and expect them both to thrive?
I think it would be lovely to have the colors intertwined.
Trees grow like that in the wild so I think it would be okay. You could always call your local nursery and ask them.
Reply:hard to predict.i planted an oak and a pine, and twisted them togeather as they grew.the oak did choke out the pine, but you should see the oak.yours would make a good combo. just dont twist them try to inter mingle them.
Reply:well, they may look nice like that but they will never thrive as well as they would if they were growing apart. if they're entwined they will compete with each other for light and nutrients and their leaves may even block out light for their partner. closely growing branches will rub against one another, which may eventually kill the branch and you could end up with a lot of dead wood which would be rather unattractive.
sorry to sound gloomy about this: by all means try it but don't expect your trees to live as long or grow as strongly.

Magnolia tree - susan. planted new 3months ago from pot, leaves yellow, going brown and falling off.?
thought this was an evergreen, have also been told that it is growing new shots but it still looks as if it is dying? help please!
Magnolia tree - susan. planted new 3months ago from pot, leaves yellow, going brown and falling off.?
Hi taff Magnolia Susan is a decidious shrub ie drops its leaves in autumn. bushy and upright with large mid-green leaves. From mid-spring to midsummer, narrow goblet-shaped, fragrant flowers emerge from slender, dark purple-red buds. These open to slightly twisted petals of purple-red on the outside and paler on the inside.
Position: full sun or partial shade
Flowering period: April to June
Flower colour: fragrant, purple-red fully hardy
Garden care: Requires minimal pruning. Remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches after flowering. Plant in a sheltered spot, adding plenty of peat to the planting hole. Mulch in spring .
Dont worry - it will be fine. cheers pendelli
Reply:Well that is surprising! Perhaps it has something to do with it being autumn lol
Reply:Magnolia trees are evergreen in the south and southwest. They might be deciduous in colder northern type zones.
If you bought it at your local nursery ask them if it is an evergreen...ask for a manager or horticultist.
Magnolias do tend to drop foliage after being planted or transplanted but usually only older leaves will fall off and new ones will replace the old ones. Hmmm kind of like people.
These trees do like lots of water they are not drought tolerant.
Every other day during the hot summer months and about 3-4 times a month during winter.
Reply:Magnolia Trees are finicky trees. If the leaves are falling off and turning brown, the plant could be in shock, that happened to me when I planted my Crape Myrtle. Give it time and it will grow back. However you should check to make sure the roots are not to wet. Take a stick and put it down in the ground next to the tree about 6" and if the dirt sticks to the stick, it is getting to much water. Also Magnolias don't like there roots touched. I would plant the tree in the ground. Mix the soil with some good compost, plant the tree and add mulch.
Reply:Magnolia 'Susan' is a deciduous tree.
Reply:I have one of these and they do lose there leaves
Reply:There are evergreen and deciduous Magnolias, which do you have. Magnolia grandiflora is the evergreen tree which has thick leathery leaves, the deciduous ones have thinner leaves which will go brown and fall off in the fall.
They are sensitive plants and will sometimes drop all their leaves when transplanted. Hopefully it will be fine in the spring if you did a good planting job and kept it watered through the summer.
Reply:it's autumm these plants do lose their leaves and grow new ones in the spring after they flower
you just leave them alone for now and prune if required after the flowers have dropped off

Can I grow a magnolia tree from a cut branch of a mature tree using "rooting powder"?
some plants are very easy to root and dont need rooting hormone at all but magnolia's are very difficult to root, even with high doses of rootone or talc. some species of magnolias are just about impossible, they loose juvenility early in new growth. most cultivars are grafted on rootstock since they do take to grafts better. im guessing your talking about M grandiflora (southern magnolia). its not impossible to root but success is usually around 10-20% and has to be from very new growth, before it hardens. but it cant hurt to try - keep it damp and warm (above 70f) in sand/peat. maybe dip the roots in alcohol prior to rooting powder. good luck.

Hi, I want to plant some bushes which blooms in spring and summer in my front yard and the yard faces North-east so minimal sun light in the winter time. Magnolia Soulangeana is a great one, it flowers in Spring then again around September. Quite hardy but not keen on being waterlogged for long periods.
Have you looked at evergreen clematis? Very pretty and again, quite hardy.
Reply:The southern magnolias we have in California and Virginia are not hardy in Ohio and other Midwestern states. Where do you live?
My very favorite vine is the purple passionflower then jasmine, trumpet, fuchsia, honeysuckle and clematis.
Reply:Clematis montana, spring flowering, easy, hardy climber. Masses of pink or white flowers. Magnolia stellata, hardy to zones 4-9 , very attractive ,white star shaped flowers, spring flowering Magnolia. Easy. Most Magnolias are April/May flowering and Magnolia loebneri is a cracking plant, early flowering ,tons of flowers.

I have a magnolia grandiflora. How is the best way to prune it?
Should have been done when dormant! Leave it to bloom and leaf-out. Make sure this grand tree has the proper fert and pest controls throughout the season.
In Late fall, after the leaves have turned colors, you can begin the process. Snip the outer limbs to the shape you need. Use a Sharpie Marking Pen, if you can, to mark any branch you wish to remove. When the tree is dormant remove those limbs. Good Luck

jerry gave you some good advice . you can cut out dead wood anytime , but these trees don't like a lot of pruning .

Can Evergreen Magnolia grandiflora be propagated using the air layering method?
I live in the Seattle area. I also would like input on transplanting the same tree. This particular one is 9-10 feet tall and has a trunk diameter of 1 1/2 - 2 inches. If I were to propagate it, is this the proper time of year?
Can Evergreen Magnolia grandiflora be propagated using the air layering method?
Transplanting:
The fleshy roots are easily damaged and any transplanting is best done during a spell of mild moist weather in late spring.
Planting:
When planting magnolias dig in as much compost as possible and work the soil in an area twice the diameter of the root ball of the plant. Place the plant in the hole then put in a strong stake before back filling so that the roots are not damaged by putting it in afterward.
Magnolias like a cool root zone so a good mulch after planting will pay dividends. Watch the plant does not get too dry in the first season since magnolias spend the first year from planting getting settled in. If they get too dry they will tend to sulk.
If there is some concern about bad drainage, plant your magnolia in a slightly raised bed so it does not sit in a pool of wet soil. If you want to plant a magnolia near water, make sure the plant has 40 - 50 centimetres of well prepared and aerated soil above the water table to get itself established in. It will appreciate the close proximity of the extra water, but let it decide how close it wants to put its roots to it.
When transplanting a magnolia it is best to move as large a block of undisturbed soil as possible and the resulting stress will be proportionally less. If the root ball gets disturbed or even shaken out completely, then the plant will benefit from a reduction of branches by at least a third. Evergreen species should be root-pruned in autumn before tranplanting, and deciduous species are best moved when dormant, though they can be treated as evergreens and root-pruned for shifting in the autumn, as long as their growth has matured when the root-pruning process starts. If you have to move one in growth, trim out all the active growing tips, and if possible spray with an anti-dessicant spray at label rates.
Layering:
Layering is the ancient, traditional way of propagating magnolias. Magnolias may be air-layered. Layered plants can be cut from the mother plant 1 to 2 years later. Layering can be done now.

Is Magnolia Little Gem hardy in norther Ohio?
I have Little gem planted in my yard but the growth in stunded or very small. Most of the leaves are small or not just developed. I have fertilize it with miracal grow and slow release fertilizer, but nothing seems to make it grow. I have watered it also, but it doesn't help. Does anyone have any ideas to help this plant? I don't think it will make it another winter. The main trunk it still green, so it is still alive. Help!!!
Is Magnolia Little Gem hardy in norther Ohio?
You are borderline OK. 'little gem' is good to zone 5 which covers most of northern Ohio. BUT, that does not allow for micro-climates in your area, nor does it allow for any genetic weakness the tree may have. You may have to experiment.
Also, the stunded growth could mean that it just doesn't like where its planted. You can do one of 2 things, wait and see if it becomes better established in its current location or relocate it. Good luck
Reply:John,
Magnolia 'Little Gem' is a cultivar of Magnolia grandiflora. Why is this important? It's important to know because Magnolia grandiflora is cold hardy to zone 7, marginal in zone 6 and you are zone 5. This plant can not tolerate your cold winters. University of Georgia say: "Hardy to -5 degrees F."

Loosing eyelid crease.

Best of LUck to You!
Reply:Hi:
You would plant the sweet Magnolia tree seed like any other seed. You will want to propagate it in a small pot. Take a very light weight pottining soil, (no bark) and add some humas and vermiculite to the soil. Add warm to hot water and mix well. Put the soil almost to the top of the small pot and cover the seed just enough where you can't see it. Water regularly and once it has become a plug, (bigger size) transplant it into a big pot. Once its roots are well established and there is some good growth, go ahead and plant it in the ground.
I hope this has helped and take a look at my website. I will direct you to my site map as well as my Landscape Article section. I have an article on growing herbs from seeds and this is the same process for your sweet Magnolia see.
Good luck and have a great day!

What is the best time of year to plant a Magnolia Tree?
For southwestern Ontario.
What is the best time of year to plant a Magnolia Tree?
spring to early summer is the best...if the magnolia is potted or B%26amp;B (balled and burlaped) any time is fine..but if the temps are above 80 degrees, make sure you water
Reply:Doesn't it tell you that on the back of the package? Right off the bat, I'd rule out winter since things don't grow very well in the cold.
Reply:The best time to plant magnolias is in early spring, before new leaves start to grow. They grow well where temperatures do not usually go below 10oF. They do best in soil that is slightly acid and well-drained.

True Southern Magnolia question?
I have a Southern Magnolia (the true version, not a hybrid)so it has light colored leaves. I live in St. Louis, MO and it's been planted in my front yard for a month or so now. It has only lost a couple leaves since I transplanted it but I haven't seen any growth. My question is, can it take the winter here? Should the leaves stay green, and if not, does this mean it has died?
True Southern Magnolia question?
It is good for zones 7 to 9. Sometimes plants will do okay a bit outside of their best zones but only time will tell in those cases.
Magnolias tend to be slow growers with new growth usually in the spring.

Using Magnolia Home Theater/Geek Squad for a Home Theater Project?
I am considering using the Magnolia Home Theater/Geek Squad division of Best Buy to purchase and install a fairly complex home theater project and would like to know if anyone has had any experiences (good or bad) with these companies. Their prices appear to be a lot more reasonable than other high-end custom installation companies, but I want to make sure I am not going to end up with an inferior product.
Using Magnolia Home Theater/Geek Squad for a Home Theater Project?
I would suggest either installing it yourself, or finding a store that specializes in audio/video/home theater systems and having them install it. A lot of times their prices are a little higher, but they offer free installs, and you get experienced staff.
I had paid for an install service from Circuit City, and the kid who rang up my order showed up at my house to do the install. He had no idea what he was doing, and wasn't even prepared. I had to provide tools. I realize CC and BB are two different companies, but they are comparable, and one of the reasons they can offer lower costs is because they offer lower paid help. At the very least, ask how experienced your install techs are going to be.
Reply:DON'T....don't do it.
They are not that good and most of the time don't know what they are doing. If you are concerned about hidding wires and hanging a plasma then get a contractor that will properly fix the drywall afterwords. What they do anyone can do.
Reply:The Magnolia divisions on Best Buy are really about as good as you can get from a big box retailer. If you're purchasing your system from Best Buy's Magnolia division, they'll do fine at the installation. If you're setting up something they may not be familiar with, find an installer who would be familiar with it.
Reply:I have heard nothing but one disaster after another! When a situation is ideal their installers do just fine, but encounter a problem and because of the time constraints placed on them will take massive short cuts with disastrous results.
I suspect you are going to a salon style of home theater company and do not have expectations, budget, time frame in mind, as you should before ever embarking on this roller coaster. The high-end pros are just showing you everything they can do, now you need to set a budget to get there.
With BB all you are doing is replacing good quality equipment and installation with inferior quality of both for savings that you will spend tenfold over as the quality of both show thru. Do not settle, I would recommend that you ask for references, just so you know it is company policy to never allow a now customer to contact a past one, I wonder why? A reputable installer is willing to work with any body and budget. They will provide glowing references, and a spelled out contract with exactly what they are going to do and not do.
BB is a horrible company that takes away from the consumer every chance they get, they endorse out and out technical fraud of technology just to move a few more units. Case in point, just two weeks ago I was made inquiry of what a sales man said: " If your TV doesn't have HDMI it won't work past 2009"! What a load of bull.
The management team encourages this type of boiler room sales tactics, that frankly a commissioned sales person would shudder at (by the by a sales and GM have a bonus riding on product sales and accessories within the store hence the boiler room tactics)
A Best Buy Geek Squad employee never goes thru any comprehensive training (just a couple of open book tests in a few hours) none do. So the marketing ploy to elevate the same dummies to regal status I just don't buy.
I suggest that you contact the local Better Business Bureau for more details on exactly how many people have lodged a complaint. These numbers represent a unacceptable number for consumer status. The fact that this is not well known goes to the crack legal team and PR hounds.
Any way good luck and here is some reading material for your consideration.

How do you get magnolia trees started from seeds?
PROPAGATION: Rare kinds of Magnolias should be propagated by grafting in the winter or spring in a greenhouse. M. acuminata or M. tripetala should be used as understocks. Otherwise, seeds, cuttings and layers may be used to increase your plants. Seeds should be sown when they are as fresh as possible. Sow them in light compost consisting of two parts peat, one part loam and one part sand
How do you get magnolia trees started from seeds?
It's difficult. I have one tiny seedling I started from a seed. I soaked the seeds in a mixture of water with a little hydrogen peroxide added until the seed coat came off and it softened up then I planted it in soil.
My little magnolia tree is about 4" tall now.

Does anyone have a michelia (now know as magnolia) plant?
I have the following Michelias: doltsopa, doltsopa 'Silver Cloud', figo, and dianica (yunnanensis).
I would really like to get a M. Alba and M. Champaca. Would be interesting to hear from those who have these in their gardens - is the scent really as legendary as it is said to be?

Now it is flowering again, is it the warm weather or is it because I trimmed it?

DD Blanchard Southern Magnolia watering needs?
I Planted a 7 ft magnolia early this spring and now the leaves are turning yellow and some are falling off....We have gotten plenty of rain so I have only watered it a few times. I thought maybe it needed water when i noticed the yellow leaves but the next day more leaves were yellow than before i watered it. Could it be getting too much water?

Magnolia or Dogwood Tree for Mother's Day?
My Mom loves plants and trees, so im planning on buying her a tree for Mother's Day tomorrow. Well, a few weeks ago she was talking about how she would love to have some Magnolia and Dogwood trees. I only am able to buy one tree for her for Mother's Day. And I was wondering which one I should buy..a Magnolia or Dogwood..cause she never really specified which one she would rather have. Opinions?
Magnolia or Dogwood Tree for Mother's Day?
As a person that has had both , I would reccomend the magnolia tree for beauty and maintenance, but, would first be inquiring of your mother as to how she likes lilac flowers. Dogwoods are brittle and don't flower or last long in comparison to their required maintenance and they are not attractive plants after they bloom. Magnolias are pretty in bloom, but they make a big mess after just a short flowering time. On the other hand, the Dark purple lilac flowers for a long time, has a strong and fantastic perfume that will blow you away and it lasts for weeks in bloom, plus makes great cuttings for fragrence in the house. The tree is low maintenance and pretty year round. I don't know your mom's age, but the lilac would definitely be the easiest to take care of also. BEAUTY%26lt; FRAGRENCE%26lt; MAINTENCE the other two don't compare
Reply:Magnolias are HUGE and MESSY. Make sure someone will scoop up the spent blossoms. Make sure your yard can handle a 50' tree. I love them, but don't want to deal with the mess, leaves, and smell.
Dogwoods are great, too. Smaller and more compact. Fewer, smaller leaves to rake, and I know of no special maintenance for them. My neighbor has 4 and does nothing to them. She planted them 15 years ago.
Reply:magnolia is a prettier tree and would last longer than a dogwoods only have a 10 year life span and have brittle branches and are maintenance nightmare. I got magnolia trees. they are beautiful!
Reply:Myself, I would prefer a magnolia. Neighbours have them and I find them beautiful. You can always get her one this year and the other one next year.

Magnolia Bakery NYC Cupcakes- Why don't mine taste the same?
So, I found the recipe for Magnolia Bakery's famous cupcakes and have made them several times. The recipe (found online) comes from the MB cookbook, but nothing tastes the same.
Can anyone tell me why?
Magnolia Bakery NYC Cupcakes- Why don't mine taste the same?
Baking is a science first and foremost. If you're replacing butter with margarine or using eggbeaters instead of eggs then they won't taste the same. Heck, your water may even taste different!
Bakeries buy the best ingredients from the best purveryors [at least the successful ones do]. You may be surprised to learn the quality of butter at the bakery is superior to the butter you can get at your local market.
Bakery ovens are regulated. Your oven may be hotter or colder than you think.
Bakery recipes make dozens upon dozens of muffins. If the recipe is really from the bakery the quantities were scaled down for the home cook. This will affect taste and quality.
Bakeries aren't likely to give up their TRUE recipe, instead they may come up with something similar for a book to appease their customers, but they're not likely to give away their secrets.
Reply:because the whole point is to go there and wait in line around the corner and crowd in there and pick out the cutest ones then stand outside and pretend you're carrie bradshaw while you eat them.
plus they put SO much icing on. maybe you need more.
Reply:Because they aren't the same.
Food always tastes better when someone else makes it.
Reply:It might be the water you use is not a tasty as teh kind in grenich village.
Reply:There are a couple of reasons:
1) Ingredient quality. As a successful commercial bakery, the MB has access to affordable ingredients that have a higher quality than what you would buy at the grocery store. Some examples: real Mexican vanilla as opposed to the vanilla extract you find at your local Kroger (which can claim to be 'pure', but usually contains glycerin or corn syrup); higher-grade flour; higher-quality butter.
2) It's not the exact same recipe. Quantities are not necessarily relative when you're scaling down a recipe from, say, one that makes eight dozen cupcakes to one that only makes 2 dozen. It's not always as simple as cutting all your ingredient amounts down by 3/4. Also, since some aspects of the recipe are proprietary, some 'special' ingredients may have been omitted. These ingredients wouldn't affect the overall finished product, but they might have a small impact on taste and texture. A lot of bakeries will do this because they don't want to give their business rivals a chance to take advantage of their own hard work.
Hope this helps!
Reply:There could be many reasons but one MAJOR reason I would highly suspect is that the bakery doesn't want to give out their special secret recipe. That's what keeps paying customers coming back for more.
I would try using the highest quality and freshest ingredients. ie : Are you sweetcream butter or margarine? Pure vanilla extract or imitation vanilla flavoring? Cake flour or all purpose? Chocolate with high or low cocao percentage?
If that doesn't change anything my next step would be experiment with the quantity of ingredients-be very, very careful. Baking is almost a science. Toying with leaveners such as baking powder, baking soda, flour, egg will leave you with varied cake textures, sunken cakes, ect. I would only suggest you do this if you're an experienced baker.
Is there something missing? Compare the two cupcakes side by side and smell and taste each. Try to single out the key ingredient. Is there a hint of almond extract? Lemon zest? A hint of cayenne in the chocolate? Brown sugar? Pumpkin pie spice? Apple sauce? Cinnamon?
Is their cupcake more moist? Incorporating buttermilk, sourcream, and/or butter are known to give cakes a moist and tender texture. It's also good to remember: ovens are different. Over baking will cause a tougher and drier texture. Underbaking- not good either because you get a rather soggy cake.
Best of luck and keep trying! :)
Reply:Because there are so many variables. Different ovens, different types of butter, flour, different mixers but most importantly different people.

It is probably possible to be allergic to anything, but has anyone ever heard of Magnolia blossom allergy?
If I get within one quarter of a mile (downwind) of a Magnolia Tree in bloom, I start getting nauseated, my head starts to hurt and I get dizzy. I feel as though I am being drugged. Getting away from it doesn't help, I'm done for the rest of the day with those symptoms. I just have to go to bed and wait it out. I'm just wondering if anyone else has this problem as I've never met anyone else that has ever heard of it before.
It is probably possible to be allergic to anything, but has anyone ever heard of Magnolia blossom allergy?
Yes, I know some people who are allergic to these blossoms. Why not, they're flowers aren't they? But the problem is that if you live down south, they're everywhere. My reccommendation is to move. Seriously. You could get shots but those only work for a few years and there is a chance your symptoms will worsen. I grew up in the midwest and never knew till I moved that what was messing with me was corn pollen. The only surefire way to take care of this was not live near corn. If you can't leave then all you can do is take a pretty strong antihistimine.

What is the best fertilizer and application rate for Southern Magnolia?
Magnolia Grandiflora likes full sun to partial shade. They are drought tolerant but prefer rich well drained acidic soil. Buy an acid loving based fertilizer and water in spring. Give this tree lots of room because they get really big. Happy Planting.

How do I plant a magnolia tree?
Here ya go:
"POTTING: With one or two exceptions, Magnolias won't grow well in lime soil, although M. acuminata will grow where a good amount of soil covers limestone. They should have deep, well-drained loam and will benefit from a bit of peat or compost placed around the roots at planting time, in the spring or fall. They will also do well in peaty soil that isn't too compact and in disintegrated granite. Once they've been planted, they shouldn't be disturbed, as this will most likely result in permanent injury. For this reason, they should be placed far enough apart to allow plenty of room to grow to their full size. Late spring is the best time to plant, just as the leaf buds begin to open. When necessary, pruning should be completed during the summer, but should really only be done to young plants. Removing branches from small trees will be tolerated, but removing large branches from established trees isn't safe. Large wounds won't heal well on old trees. Decide when the tree is small how you want it to look and begin shaping and training toward that. Wounds made in pruning should be covered with tree-wound paint. When harvesting leaves of the Sweet Bay, M. virginiana, they should be snipped when the plant is 12 to 18 inches high. Don't take more than a third of the leaves. Dried leaves of Sweet Bay retain little of their fragrance."
"Do not be tempted to apply fertilizer. You can apply micronutrient treatments such as iron, magnesium, manganese, but avoid applying high levels of nitrogen fertilizer. The last thing you want to do is to push top growth before an adequate root system is regenerated."

Reply:dig a hole, then chuck it in there, then fill the hole
I want to buy and plant a bracken brown beauty magnolia tree, but I live in Michigan (Zone 5).?
the tree is a zone 6 and up. Can I still plant it? We have been having mild winters and have heard that they thrive in places such as cincinnati, ohio.
I want to buy and plant a bracken brown beauty magnolia tree, but I live in Michigan (Zone 5).?
I can't remember who said it but a wise gardener once said "i consider everything hardy till i have killed it three times" and while that may be a tad expensive i think the idea that hardiness zones are worth experimenting with has merit. The cultivar you mention is considered on of the hardier forms of Magnolia grandiflora (along with Edith Bouge and Victoria) would seem to be worth experimenting with in your area.
Here are a few tips on pushing the limits of your zone.
- remember micro-climate can make all the differance in the world and try to plant in a sheltered location .
- start small, less expensive and small plants are more adaptable and they will also benifit from things like snow cover in those crucial first years of establishment.
- if possible buy from a nursery that is located as far north as possible and make sure the plants they are selling have made it through at least one of their local winters.
- Many magnolias are propagated and grown a long way south and then flood the market in spring thse plants especially the larger ones can find it hard to adapt to a new climate.
- If possible buy one that has not been grafted (this may be hard to find but specialist magnolia nurseries might have them) Plants growing on their own roots can regrow if they are killed to the ground and things like rootstock hardiness (those southern folks don't have to worry about things like that with their mild climates) are removed from the equation.
You should also expect that the plant will take a while to get established and never grow to the dimensions that it would have further south and a bit of winter protection can help in the early years.
So will it grow? Hard to say but it does well on the west coast in some areas that get fairly cold (well by their standards anyway) and it will be ok down to about 0 deg f with no problem and i can think of a few plants in southern ontario as well but i must say i have always failed with it in my neck of the woods despite the reasonably mild winters as of late (havent hit -30 deg C in years) and this failure applies to all the M. grandiflora cultivars however it will survive in an un heated polyhouse that only gives a few degrees of cold protection.
Good luck Mark
Reply:We have one in Garden city. Not sure what species it is but it's between the houses so it's somewhat protected in the winter.

In the UK. Worried it mightn't flower again in spring.
Is anyone else's magnolia flowering at the moment?
I was thinking of buying a magnolia for my small garden so I visited our garden centre and saw that they had some about 3ft high in pots costing £10 each. They had buds on but no flowers..I think the flowering session is over till next spring. Anyhow I bought one and waiting to see what happens.
Reply:All the Magnolias in NC are in bloom now.
Reply:yes 30 flowers were open today.s yorks.
Reply:You're not the only one, I've seen a neighbours that briefly flowered again last month.
Same happened with my Wisteria.
Don't worry though, it will flower again in spring.
Reply:I have Magnolia Lilliflora Susan flowering at the moment. It does not have many blooms now but always flowers prolifically in March and August.
M. Stellata and M. Stellata Leonard Messell flowers one after the other in Spring. They are all fifteen years old, happy and only get a "feed" in late Summer.
Reply:Yes, we have a huge magnolia and it is flowering although they are coming to an end now.
They will be back.
Reply:Yes I live in Devon and am a gardener, the various gardens I work in there are five Magnolia trees, all are showing flowers and most are also showing seeds, which I have never seen before, hope this helps.

I have tryed 7 dust and some other stuff but doesn't seem to be helping, is there something that will get rid of this or do I need to cut it out or all the way down.

Your magnolia may have scale. Bring a piece in to you local county extension office and they will ID it. If it is scale, ultra fine oil is the remedy.
Reply:sounds like scale spray it with sm white oil/ pest oil.
