Why is my southern magnolia leaves Turing black?
Lower, older branches or young, new growth?
Older growth - check for Verticillium wilt
New growth - check to see if this is frost damage from a late freeze.

Can you prune an Edith Brogue Magnolia? (this is the large flower southern type magnolia)?
Some advise from a gardening site:
The overall size of a magnolia can be limited by annual pruning immediately after blooming. As long as the twiggy flowering wood is left and the long shoots and any dead wood is removed, the flower display is maintained on a compact tree. On some varieties this annual prune encourages the tree to produce stems which have up to six or eight flowers spaced along them.

Reply:Don't forget that this plant is a dwarf. The more you prune it the smaller it will be. Prune immediately after flowering because mags set their floral buds in the fall.
Reply:yes u can after this it will go thru SHOCK 4 a while,then it will grow as normal . i have 1 n my front yard its probably about 100 yrs . my husband has to keep it trimed alot. but dont worry it will not kill it. they r very strong trees.they will take over everything eles tho. (the ROOTS).

In Steel Magnolia's Truvy had a recipe for a cake called "cupa cupa cupa" does anyone know this recipe???
Cupa Cupa Cupa Recipe ~
This is a cobbler type cake.
1 cup self-rising flour
1 cup sugar
15 ounces fruit cocktail (do not drain)
Mix flour and sugar.
Gently mix in fruit cocktail.
Bake in small casserole dish at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes, till bubbly and golden brown.
Mixture will double in size while baking.
Can be served warm or room temperature.
Top with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

That might be similar to the original "pound" cake recipes, which called for a pound of butter, a pound of flour, a pound of sugar and a pound of eggs (no wonder people didn't live very long!) .... maybe this one called for a cup of everything:)

Are magnolia leaves used as an herb or have any nutrient value?
I don't know about the leaves but the bark is used to supress the production of cortisol. A lot of cortisol-based weight loss drugs use it as an ingredient.

Magnolias originate from Chinese cool hillsides.More flowers are produced if planted in neutral/acid soil.Not too much direct sunlight,not too much wind exposure.Do not plant in too dry position,but definately no winter waterlogging either.
Ideal climates are Ireland and Britain moist summers and moderate winters.
